Feeding

HI,
I have a yellow nape and a pineapple green cheeked conure and here is my question. I feed them a mix of Hagen Tropimix and Tropican in the morning in one bowl and fresh fruit and or veggies in another bowl. I leave the pellets in their cage all day while I'm at work. At night I give them fresh/ frozen chop that I made. There is always pellets left at the end of the day. Although I change the food every day, I feel like I'm wasting some of the food and my money. The left over pellets and some days there's quite a bit, are fine. I though I should throw it threw a strainer and get rid of the smaller granular and crumbs and mix back in with a fresh bowl. Is that wrong?? I don't think I'm giving them too much, but I hate to waste.
Any thoughts??? suggestions, what does everyone else do? :green2:

I don't fill Tillie or Jasper's bowl full of pellets. I give them what I think they'll eat in a day. I dump it out every morning and wash the bowl and put fresh in. I don't try to recycle pellets because I figured they've gone through it with their mouths and probably touched some of it if not all. Also, they tend to dip the pellets in their water and going back and forth between pellets and water, water has gotten on most of the pellets at some point during the day and had time to dry out. So it's not really that fresh. When I wash the pellet bowl, I find pieces of dried pellets on the side. By throwing out the old pellets and putting in fresh, I can monitor how much they eat. I use 1/8 measuring cup to measure out the pellets. Over all cost is really cheap, not worth saving a few bucks for me. It's $15 for a 2.5 pound bag which lasts 1 parrot about a month??

maybe I'm giving them too much each day because it seems like I am wasting too much. I will adjust the amount.

I remove the pellet dish before giving chop so there is no conflict. Some of my birds prefer the crunchy foods rather than what is healthier.

Whether or not "old" pellets remain viable for the next day depends on your bird's habits. Some of mine take what they want and eat elsewhere while others run to the water bowl, dip the pellet to soften, and return to the dish to contaminate. In the latter case, the lifespan is less than one day!!

My Nape doesn't dip...but my conure does. His water is always a mess.
