So, our girl gets plenty of fresh veggies, chop, pellets, and fruits to eat.
She has 4 dishes in her condo, two for water, one for pellets, and one for fresh / cooked food.

Lately she has discovered that she can get "more" out of her pellets if she dunks them in her water dish. This moistens them just enough so they don't crumble and fall to the ground when she crunches on them.

Naturally she drops some pellets in her water while dunking and I happen to see her fishing for them today. That girl was going into the water and almost covering her nostrils !!!

Afraid that she would inhale the water, Daddy to the rescue. First I removed her bowl and gave her clean water, but only filled it half way. I took a pellet, dunked it for her and gave it to her. She woofed that down and side shuffled over to her pellet dish, shuffled back to the half full water bowl and dropped the pellet in. She retrieved another pellet, dropped that one in the water and proceeds to fish out the first one that was soaking a little longer. She enjoyed that one and then fished out the second pellet for her enjoyment too.

Amazing !

She's smart, and if anyone wants to call me a bird brain, I'll happily accept the complement :)

So, I guess we'll leave the one water bowl half full and let her keep on dunking. Don't want to see her get s snoot full of water !

On weekends we'll change it several times a day and during the week it will have to wait till we get home. She will have the other bowl full and hopefully keep that one cleaner during the day.

Thanks
Kelly, Karl, and Arika

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Parrot Dunkers. A surprising large family of Parrot Staff People who care for and provide extensive amounts of fresh water each day for their beloved Parrots to dunk pellets.

My Ollie dunks his pellets all day everyday. I change is water like 5 times a day and when in his travel carrier he has a water bottle and tries to shove his pellets into it to get them wet. Cute but annoying to clean and I always have to check it to make sure it's not clogged. Watch out for that if you get a water bottle.

Yes, they are professional mess makers :)

I guess the main thing I wanted to bring to light was the their intelligence and the half full water bowl. In the event you have a dunker, that may be an option for you. I was concerned about her diving her face in too deep and inhaling water.

Never a dull moment with feathered friends.

Thanks

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Life is half-full when you have a macaw!!

Many parrots engage in such behavior, and you are absolutely correct to frequently change the water bowls. Allowing a soupy bowl to stagnate brings unwanted gifts from the microscopic world!
