Sexing a Red Rump Parrot

Hi all, is anyone able to tell me what sex this red rump is. It is the offspring of my pair. I would like to get a mate for it but need to know what sex it is first. I'm thinking it is female due to dull colouring and absence of red rump. Has anyone got any ideas please?

Hello AnnetteA and welcome to the Forum!

I'm not sure what gender your very pretty bird is - I would hazard a very tentative guess at female but I wonder if it may also depend on how old it is and whether this is it's final adult plumage?

Hoping one of our wiser heads will see this and be able to help you :)

Hi AnnetteA

To myself it looks like an immature male, so my first question is how old it is?

The mutation colour your bird is an Opaline, and many occasions males will not carry the red rump

This bird is 2 years old so does that make it an adult? Apart from DNA test are there any other indications of sex? Father is Opaline (very bright colourings) and mother is Lutino Opaline? (yellow with red head & upper back)

At two years your bird is definitely an adult, they reach maturity at one year old. As far as male or female is concerned however, the opaline/lutino mutations may make that a little harder to determine for sure.

DNA sexing can be done in some parts of the world by sending away a recently plucked feather to a lab for testing, although I've never done it myself. You can of course also have it done by a certified avian vet. The link below may help you find one if you don't have one already.........

Hopefully though Noah may pop by with some more info for you. He really knows his stuff :)

I would still say it’s a male, and thank you for letting me know the age
By looking at the blue shoulders and the extensive red down the back, it mainly indicates that it’s a male, but as LaManuka said DNA sexing is always the best

If you could possibly get a photo of the parents, that would be fantastic as well :)

These are the parents. I can perhaps get better photos if this doesn't help

Thankyou Noah, we had this one separated for a while and then put it back in aviary with parents. Mum started picking on it, chasing it around the aviary so we separated it again. Hoping to get a mate for it. Do you know if we can keep multiple pairs together in an aviary if we remove nesting box?

Very welcome AnnetteA

Unfortunately I would not recommend keeping more than 1 pair of Red rumps to an aviary, as they can get quite aggressive and will kill the other pairs chicks when they breed, and beat up other individuals

Best of luck with the rest of your Breeding!
