Found "lost and found"

Hi

I am the new and unexpected owner of what I think is a Lutino Indian Ringneck.
He was found in a local school play ground. He was advertised, but was never claimed.

Because I don't know any of his past history, I'd appreciate anyone's views on his age and any help I might be able to get regarding some behaviors. I have had him for a few weeks now, and he is very happy to climb onto my hand, but any time I try to touch more than his feet he tries to extract a blood sample! I can't think of any training techniques to get around this, now that he is probably an older bird.

Probably over two years old, if not older.

Did you check our local classifieds? Craigslist? Kijiji? 911 Parrot Alert?

Most ringnecks typically don't enjoy being touched in a cuddly manner, although some do enjoy head scritches. Just give him time and continue working on gaining his trust!

Cute! I got Darcy in a similar manner. I posted an ad on craigslist saying FOUND PARROT, with my info (not a description though, in case someone just wanted a free parrot). Nobody replied. Lucky me!

They are hard to not come to love when nobody claims them. BUT here's what I was told by the local shelter. You actually have no right to keep it cause once the owners do realize who have their bird, they can actually ask for them back, if you refuse, they can sue you. The shelter told me you should always bring it in as they give the owners two weeks to pick up, if no answer, then they would be up for adoption and the previous owners would have nothing to say against the adopter.

Now down to the question that was being asked, just let him get used to you first. Once you gain his full trust, then try to do other stuffs. Like Monica mentioned already, they don't typically enjoy being touched, but I never really owned one to really tell you anything otherwise. But that's pretty much with any bird, you must gain their trust first before proceeding to touch their wings and such.

I certainly wouldn't be keeping him if I could find the original owner. The bird has obviously been handled and tamed to a degree, and I feel for who ever lost him! He has been advertised in many different ways in New Zealand for several weeks.

Didn't realize you were in New Zealand... I do know of a bird rescue/rehome that deals with many lost and found birds... if you haven't spoken to them, I can try and get in touch with them or someone who works with them and see if they've heard anything.

You can also check at local vets, too, if you haven't already.

If all those areas have been exhausted, then I guess you've got yourself a new little buddy! And he's gorgeous!
