Charlie - African Grey

Treacle - African Grey
Hi there,

One of our African Greys escaped from her travel carrier while we were transporting her to a relative to look after while we were going on holiday. She escaped in North East Lincolnshire (LN11 area) last Thursday lunchtime, 17th May 2018.

We have been back every day since and searched the area, handed out leaflets and put up posters in all neighbouring villages. We are putting an article into the Louth Leader (local paper to the area) and we are trying to get it mentioned on Lincs FM (local radio).

The area we think she is in is all fen and farmland, so we have notified all the farmers we were able to find.

Is there anything else we can do? Does anyone know the kind of behaviour of an escaped African Grey who was born in captivity? Can everyone please spread the word? Her name is Charlie, she is 15 years old, and she has been with us for 14 years. She bonded with me over 13 years ago and I am going quietly out of my mind.

I’m so sorry! There’s a thread here somewhere with suggestions on what to do when a bird is lost. I’m sure one of the moderators knows where it is.

In the meanwhile I’m hoping all the best for you and the swift return of your grey!

Awe, I'm so, so sorry to hear this, we always hate to hear this when it happens...

The important thing to keep in-mind at all times is that you need to be proactive about finding her, and never give-up, even when you feel like it's hopeless, as parrots are found and reunited with their owners every single day, sometimes within days, weeks, months, even years later. The key is keeping people in the area that she escaped in aware of her escape and keep her in their consciousness long-term.

The first place that I would post her as a "Lost Parrot" is on Lost & Found Parrot Registry & Database - 911ParrotAlert

Parrot911 is worldwide and is probably the best resource for reuniting parrots with their owners, as people can post both parrots that they have lost AND parrots that they have found.

Also, I don't know exactly what online resources are available in the UK, for example we have Craigslist here in the US, the huge, online site for buying and selling, which is broken down into local Craigslist pages, and often people post lost and found pets, and it's the first place people go to in the US to advertise a lost pet. So whatever online sites exist in the UK, I'd highly suggest posting about your bird on ALL OF THEM, as online is where people look first nowadays..

Posting about your bird being lost on your Facebook page, as well as on all of the Facebook pages belonging to local pet rescues and animal shelters near where she was lost.

Be sure to contact ALL of the local law enforcement agencies/police/fire/rescue services, veterinarians, pet shops and bird shops, and all animal shelters and rescues (local to the place she was lost) of your bird's disappearance, and give them all your personal contact information, as these are the places that people who find a parrot usually contact first...

Anything that we can help you with, please, just ask and we will.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find her soon. Hopefully she'll approach someone when she gets hungry...

Are they a Congo or Timneh?
I'll keep my eyes peeled on Preloved and Gumtree!
Is your grey closed rung or not?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Very sorry to hear of your missing Grey. Hopefully you will be reunited soon.

As others have posted, timeliness is so helpful to alert the community.

Thank you everyone for your support and advice. Violet_Diva - we think she is a Congo but we are no experts.

I have just done a live radio interview with BBC Radio Lincolnshire so hopefully that will get the word out there.

I don't know how we did it, but we managed to get the local TV News (BBC Lincolnshire) to run the story at tea time on Tuesday. Still no sightings though. Still looking.

Great to know you are getting the word out! A very important consideration if your Grey has been taken in by a sympathetic host.

Possible sighting in Covenham village (2 miles away) last Thursday morning (24th May) but only heard about it Saturday morning. Went straight over but nothing seen or heard. Posters and leaflets everywhere in the village.

Two miles away is a very relevant sighting given time and distance. Keep the hope and the word out as much as possible.
