Getting my single Lovebird a companion?

I found her in my backyard about a year ago.

I am afraid she may be lonely. She yearns to go outside with the wild birds. She is often almost desperate to get out of her cage on our shoulder.

Problem is, I am afraid that if I get another bird, they will either mate, or fight. I don't want either.

If you don't want them to mate, get another female. They may fight, they may not. Get another cage and put it next to your current one. They will still interact and socialize. If it gets to the point when you're comfortable keeping them together, then go for it.

with lovebirds, especially female lovebirds, introduction is tricky and can be dangerous. lovebirds are territorial and are known to kill other birds.


also, i dont generally think it's a good idea to get a second bird for a bird--get another bird only if you want another bird. because if it doesnt work out, you will have TWO birds to divide YOUR time with always good to be prepared.

my two lovebirds are siblings. same clutch. they grew up together, but as they matured, the female decided she hated her brother in her cage and that was the end of that. now they dont live in the same rooms as the female has tried to attack him badly even out of the cage--if she wants a perch he is on, she will throw him off by biting at him and making him bleed. it's not worth it. they cuddle and preen eachother, but the moment SHE wants something she beats the poop out of him. and it's not fair to him.


so it's never a guarantee they will get along.

so i guess in the end, i'd only get a second one if you are prepared to possibly have two needy birds if they dont get along

a conure might be a good choice.

depends on the bird, a male would be best suited for your lovebird.

conures tend to get along with cockatiels, lovebirds, some budgies, and larger type birds
