Hello

I have a lovebird which I had since it was a baby about 25-29 old according to the previous owner. I took him to hand raise hims as the previous owner had some circumstances where he wasn't able to raise him. I am not an expert in raising lovebirds but I had to take him as it needed to be with some one who can take care of it ASAP.

Now the lovebird is about 2 months old (58 day aprox)

My problem with him is that he still only wants the formula. I give him seeds, fresh fruit but when ever he's hungry he'll only eat the formula. He'll try the seeds and eats it from time to time. And the fruits he'll try it and nipple it but will not eat all he'll just try it. I feed him 3 times a day about 8ml. When he is hungry and sees me he goes crazy, I try some times to see if he'll try to eat the seeds but he won't stop until i feed him so I do as I don't want him to strave.

He's very healthy, started flying a while ago but the problem he's not eating on him own yet.

What I have read and also been told is that by the age he should be fully weaned and eating on it's own.

Please any advice on weaning him.

Thanks

Iā€™m sorry it seems like you were sold a baby bird who was too young to have left the breeder. This seems to happen far too often and Iā€™m sorry I donā€™t have any constructive advice for you but perhaps someone else here will. I wish you the best of luck!

Take him to the vet and check for bacterial or fungal infections. That is o e thing that can make a bird reluctant to wean. Iā€™m sorry that you were given a bird so young :(

A few important questions!

- What sort of formula food is the lovebird getting (what ingredients are in it + do you buy it or home make it?)
- Do you feed him with a syringe/plunger thing - or does he nom it from a bowl/plate thing?
- Since he's flying how long does he spend in/out of his cage/home?

As I said, I did not buy it, I took it in from a friend who had work related circumstance and wasn't able to take of it. I know it was young to leave the breeder but there was no possibility for it to be taken back.

I give it the Versele laga nutribird a21 from the pet store I believe it's a well know brand and it was recommended from pet store.
I feed it with a syringe. Lately I would let the food drop a little bit from the syringe and he would eat it but not a lot.

I had in a broader first and when he started flying I put the broader in a big cage like ones used for large parrots. He sleep in the broader and play around, when his feathers were complete and was standing on the berches I removed the broader.
He usually spends a few hours outside the cage but some times less depending on who's home.

From the time I posted, I see by the food and I that he's eating from the seeds and eating less from the formula but when it's time to be feed he'll only eat the formula.
