Hello everyone.

I recently aquired two blue and gold macaws. I happened to be jogging a few streets down from mine, and came across very old lady who looked as if she was trying to poke the two birds with a stick. I struck up a conversation with her and found out she was trying to get the birds to "return to the wild and live outside", living in Washington state i knew these tropical birds would probably not last more then a few days in our climate..so i managed to let her give them to me.

Anyway..this brings me here, I have had experience with a LC amazon I owned years ago, but none with birds of this size. One of the birds plucked all of its front feathers out, and is nearly featherless in the front. The other is in fine shape, but they are both mean birds. The featherless one has a look in its eye that I can only describe as psychotic, it will attack anything that go's near its cage with a vengence. The other one will bite you, but it doesn't seem to "want" to bite you, it looks more of like a scared bite or a reaction bite. It also has a friendlier look in its eyes, if that makes sense.

These birds look like they are bonded to each other. Is there any hope of getting either of them to not bite? I dont want to seperate them, as they preen each other and enjoy each others company. The bald one laid in egg the other day, so I know at least one is a female. I am thinking they are most likely bonded together and any normal human interaction is probably out of the question. Would this be the case? Should I give these birds to a bird sanctuary? Would that be better for them perhaps? I don't want to be invasive and stress them out by putting sticks in their cage, as they seem incredibly scared of things entering their cage. (no toe tags so maybe caught in the wild?)

Anyone have any experience with a pair of bonded mean birds?

Thanks

First off I want to welcome you to the forum, and say "good for you" for A) Keeping these birds from an untimely demise (you are right, they would have lasted until the winter in Washington State, and then, come wintertime ... well :( ) and B) Volunteering for this massive undertaking. You have many issues going against you with these two ... give me a few minutes to formulate some advice and get it posted here ...
