i know i took the same toy out of all the rest of the birds cages........the vet basically said to wait that really nothing they can do i called the emergency vet....i should of known that a toy strong with shoe laces was dangerous...i sent emails out to all the bird club leaders to tell them the toys being sold aren't safe...i feel bad b/c the lady who sells them is very nice but they just aren't safe

I hope your little Macaw's foot will be okay. I always worry about toys and things I leave in my guys' cages. I try to think of all possible ways my birds might become caught in or choked by cage items before I'll allow them access to the items. I worry a lot about thin ropes and long chains. I especially worry about those chains and chain or rope swings with wooden blocks or other objects strung on them, because when some of the blocks are broken away from the chains by the birds during playtime, the chains or ropes can possibly be twisted around the bird's neck which would become a weighted noose scenario. Parrot necks are very small in diameter; even the necks of large Macaws are small. I've always thought it best to carefully consider everything we place in our bird cages. Just to be safe!

I sincerely hope your Illiger's foot makes a full recovery!

The people at the bird club seem reluctant to do anything because this lady does toy making as. Business but I don't care and will announce the toys dangers at the next meeting

So sorry about your guy's foot. :( Hope it looks much better by morning.

Business or no business, if her toys are unsafe, they do NOT belong in a bird's cage.

Please keep us posted, and here's wishing to an extra speedy recovery. :)

Can you post of picture of the toy just in case others have this toy in their cages so we can remove them. Best of luck with your Macaw. Thanks Joe

I'm so sorry for your fid. it had to be very stressful on you. Maybe you could email the lady who makes the toys and suggest a safe fix to the toy. Maybe replace the shoe strings with spiral cut straws ? Here is a link to make the curly straws:

I would bet if you approach the situation in a non accusatory way, she will probably be receptive to your situation and ideas. Just paint it in a light that you want to help her improve the safety of the toys she sells. Maybe she would name the toy after your fid.

I'm very sorry to hear that. If I were you I would take her to the vet and have her foot and leg x-rayed. The x-ray images should provide a good assessment of any bone or ligament damage. If it checks out well on the x-rays then my guess will be that the swelling is due to soft tissue trauma, which I think should heal in time.
