Advice needed

Hi guys! I've been missing having a macaw around terribly. I've fostered 2 B&G, 1 Scarlet, and 1 Greenwing at different times so the rescue could have more space. I've fallen in love with them. My uncle had a greenwing when I was younger. The most amazing bird ever. I need some advice. I live with my mother. She doesn't mind the screaming from my Eclectus or my Amazon but she doesn't tolerate macaw noise well. I have a few questions to ask you guys. 1.) Should I get a baby or an adult? I'm not asking for the bird not to scream, I'm pretty good with training and plan on establishing a contact call. Also, is it possible to sound proof a room?

It is possible to soundproof a room, but you may not like the cost.....

If you want to post room dimensions & pics, I'll let you know what you'll need.....also need to know if the building is single story or other.....

It's my mom's house and we own it. She had a bad experience with a macaw once and now she is kind of against me having one. The first 3 macaws I fostered weren't very good examples of a well behaved macaw. Now the greenwing. He was a wonderful, predictable & friendly(me only), He likes to scream for attention, but I would like to train him to make different vocalizations for attention. He talks quiet well. He is still at the rescue and they are strapped for space. This bird needs me. My mom may say she doesn't like him but she enjoyed him so much the last time he was here. The dancing and his goofy personality made her laugh more than once.

I will always suggest getting an older adult because you can bypass a lot of the changes a baby bird will go through once it reaches sexual maturity. Since you have worked with rehomed birds, you already know that the older ones need you more. There will always be homes for babies, but not the older, misunderstood parrots.

I looked at your avatar and wondered how old you were and what your plans were for the future? Future plans are important because if you move out of your mother's house, where will you live then? I also noticed you already have 4 birds. Do you really need another larger bird? If you rent anything, landlords play a big part in what type of pets are allowed in the home. I have read many CL parrot ads saying that the noise is too much and the bird must be rehomed. Please think of your future before making any additional lifelong commitments.

This is what I did before purchasing my boys Male Eclectus (Guapo) and GW (Neleno).
I kept a log for one month, how much time I spent at Home. How much money I had left over at the end of the month.
I found that one I spent a good majority at home so time being spent with my boys was not an issue. I then looked at the money and found that I had plenty of month left over for food, vet visits, toys. I live in a Condo so I checked with my Neighbors to see if they would have an issue with me having birds. All of my neighbors are much older and most of them are hard of hearing as the blast their T V. All neighbors treat me as if I was their Son and no one had an issue.
I purchased my Eclectus first to see if there were going to be an issue. After the 1st year, no issues and everyone in my building just love Guapo. Then I purchased my GW, Although most of my neighbors are scared of the size of Neleno, he is a real sweet heart but still no issues.
I would advise you to look 10 years down the road and see if having the Parrots you currently have in your life is enough, if you find that you have the love in your heart and the finances for a Macaw or GW. Who are we to tell you what to do, but I say go for it. Best of luck and keep us posted. Joe

When that GW goings into full mating mood you would think differ about predictability!!! I thought my Willie was predictable at one point until he reach his hormone cycle. He became very hostile. Now he's out of it, easy to handle like he once was. But every year we go through the same routine....Just be real careful! I see in your avitar your kissing your Eclectus on the beak, I would think twice about the macaw! The only time I would kiss Willie is IF I was holding his beak. When you get your skin peeled off like a banana peel you would know not to trust them in that situation. As long as you can get those stuffs cleared off, then by all means go for it if he needed a home!!!!
