I swear Fargo is a genius :20:

In february, i was starting to teach him to fetch, but only did one or 2 training sessions, and just got him to chase after the ball!
Then i got sidetracked and trained other tricks! :p

So he hasn't learnt anything since the end of June.. So i thought might as well teach him to fetch!

Today at lunch time, i got him to chase the ball, he picked it up, and i would have my hand next to it.. When he placed it in my hand, he got a reward.. When he didnt.. No reward!

Only did it for about 5 minutes!

Then tonight before his bedtime, i thought we will just have another quick session again...

I chucked the ball... and Fargo ran back to me holding it

I couldn't believe it.. Quickly got the camera and recorded it.. Probably videod him doing it 50 times hahahaha

He learnt how to fetch the ball in one training session!!!

I swear he is a genius!

He had just had dinner, so he was a bit slow with his running ;) HAHA

This was at the beginning, just a short distance:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbH_L7G2dkI&feature=youtu.be"]Fargo the macaw learning how to fetch - YouTube[/ame]

Then a bit further, you can see how gently he places it back in my hand hahaha
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPpv9DL3LPI&feature=youtu.be"]Fargo the macaw fetching longer distances - YouTube[/ame]

and another!
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGk8x34BlTA&feature=youtu.be"]Fargo the macaw fetching a ball - YouTube[/ame]

So thats trick number 21!!!!!!!!

Now that he has learnt to fetch, that opens up a whole range of new things to teach i think! Basketball, ring toss! :)

Soo proud of my little boy! :D

I was actually surprised he did it for so long, usually if he is bored he just flies off! But he must enjoy chasing after a ball hahaha

and you will see his tongue sticks out a few times :p

Tab, do you mind listing the tricks that Fargo can do? I'm running out of ideas for the Beaks. They can 'play ball', 'fetch' and put beads 'in the bin'. Just lately, I've been teaching them to go through a tunnel. After that, I'm out of ideas! I'd love to teach Barney to hang by his beak off my finger, but whenever I try to lift him, he just scrambles onto my hand. Madge is less happy about doing tricks than Barn (probably because she's a busy body and far more interested in gossip).

It would be good if we all contributed to a list of parrot tricks and how we taught them, wouldn't it?

Definitely!

Fargo's tricks
Target
Wave
Turn around
Shake
Hi 5
Stick em up
Flight Recall ( If you count that as a trick )
Tunnel
Slide
Hello on command
Kiss on command
Nod
Flip
Roll over
Climb rope
Bow
tongue on command
Bang- play dead
Somersault
Skateboard
Fetch

Oh he has also learnt to whisper to you on command, not sure if thats a trick? hahah

List to do: Superman (Yoga)

And today i also started teaching him to 'Hide'

Which is where he puts his head back under his wing! After a minute of training he was already started to put his head back, but not fully! So he should have that one figured out soon if i keep up with the training!!

Now that he can fetch, we will start on basketball, piggy bank, and coloured ring toss! :)
Then theres the jigsaw!

I wish there was a cheap trick training shop, because the australian shops are so expensive with props :31:

When i get some money i will buy him a scooter or roller skates... and i just realised i have money to spend at my parrot shop!!! Roller skates here we come!

Would be a great idea to have a list and how we taught them, its just so much effort typing it all up hahahaha

Oh can also teach- shake head no, yawn on command, or scratch on command..

Fargo actually scratched his head 3 times on command today, was strange, not sure if that could be a new trick :S hahaha

Check out ebay. Search for 'desktop toys' and you can get basketball hoops, golfing greens and ten pin bowling setups. I've also gotten a miniature shopping trolley and skateboards from China (can't stop Barn from chewing on them just yet, though). Don't forget Barbie and her minions either: Barbara's clothing and accessories are just the right size for birdie props. :D

Valentino - Red Fronted Macaw - Hatched August 12, 2012
Love his waddle over to the marble to go get it. Waddle waddle waddle picks up marble...waddle waddle waddle back to mommy to give the marble. LOL Like a puppy he will probably do it over and over and over. Maybe he likes the glass feeling on his tongue?

Valentino is always bringing me things like pieces of wood from his toys, pieces of plastic he chewed off from a toy, he brought me a pellet and some paper. From what I understand this is bonding behavior of a RFM and they like to bring stuff to their favorite person. Lupe says he will bring me live bugs next and if he does I still have to praise him and still love him. "You cannot run away screaming from your baby. You have to still love him even if he brings you a bug maybe missing a wing or a leg." How GROSS! At night when changing into PJ's I am always digging stuff out of my bra. Pieces of wood, paper, plastic bits what ever Valentino has brought to me and shoves into my bra. What a freak huh?

How much would you charge to come to America and teach my grandkids to put our stuff away when they're done playing with it?

Haha so nice!!! I wonder how do you teach him the hide trick tho?

Thanks!

Its actually easy, so he is sitting on his stand, i will say 'hide' and place my hand over my eyes ( as the signal )

Then hold a treat under his wing, so he reaches back, and puts his head under his wing like he is hiding!

After he did it with the treat, i only used my finger, when he got it under there, i said good boy, and he got a treat!

Now i only have to point under his wing, and dont have to keep my finger under there, and he puts his head under by himself!

So slowly figuring it out ;)
