I have been researching everything about the Blue and Gold Macaw for years in preparation to own one as a hand-raised family pet/member. You can never study them for too long before purchasing one ;)

I've been so focused on the Blue and Gold, I haven't really considered any others like the Greenwing.

What are the differences in temperament and 'mushy-ness'?

Which species, in your opinion/from your experience, is better suited to a young family who loves big lap birds? Input much appreciated ^^

Oh that's a tough one!!

I think either will make a fantastic lap bird if raised and socialized properly.

My GW cracks me up on a regular basis with his antics, motions, and the way he snuggles, but my Niko makes me laugh equally as much.

Which bird "appeals" to you more????

Looky, there's a discussion about something quite similar at the moment. :) http://www.parrotforums.com/macaws/36636-macaw.html

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
For my money it's a Greenwing, but then I am exceedingly biased on this issue... Neither bird is extremely beaky. They are both "easier" species to work with (if you know how.)

And the cuddle factor with macaws, really depends on how they are raised and socialized...

Stick one in a cage, ignore it, and don't handle it much, you're going to have a problem on your hands no matter what species you get...

I have both although not that long, little over a month. I love my B&G and wouldn't trade him for anything, but my greenwing is so silly. He does crack me up. My B&G is 22 and my GW is 5 so maybe it's their age, but I don't think so. They are both pretty cuddly too. You could always get one of each? I was NOT planning on having 2, but I have no regrets. Good luck deciding.
