Laying Eggs

Hello all,

I am hoping that someone can help. I am owned by my beautiful blue and gold. I rescued him 10 years ago from a bad home. He is not a he like I was told but a she and is laying eggs. I did research and called a vet, however I am worried about my feathered friend. The first three eggs she sat on them. After about 2 weeks she took to sitting on a blue plastic chew toy, which I lovingly dubbed "baby". After a few more weeks, she stopped and I thought that I was in the clear however yesterday morning when I went to giver her breakfast there was another egg. Then again today. She does not seem as interested this time, and I am waiting for the vet to call me, but he is out of office. So I turn to you all, I hope that maybe one of you can stear me in the right direction.

OI!!! This is a tough one. I personally would leave the eggs with her, have her sit on them if she's interested, otherwise she may continue laying more.

I would also remove anything and everything that could resemble nesting material, including any and all toys that have string or cloth attached to them.

Lastly I would have her vetted, and if can't be broken of the habit, I'd strongly consider either hormone therapy, and if that still fails, you could have her ovaries removed.

Thanks for the ideas, I have another cage that she used to be in, I think i am going to put her back in it. I am still waiting for the vet, but in the mean time I am watching her very carefully.

How does a 10 yr old bird lay eggs if no male was around? Do birds not mate like most other animals? I'm really confused could someone elaborate

Well parrots, like chickens just lay eggs, they don't need a male at all. It's a hard thing because I knew a lady and her cockatiel had an egg but she egg binded and she died. Egg binding means the egg gets stuck so they can't get it out and ya it is a common thing sometimes in smaller birds.

Birds don't need a mate to lay eggs that is correct. Egg binding is a big issue, usually caused by calcium deficiency and excessive egg layers are very prone to egg binding. It also happens sometimes if the hen lays her first egg.

To the OP, where is she laying the eggs??? Have she been masturbating against the toys? IF so, remove them! She's in the season right now, just leave the eggs be until she shows absolutely no interest in them. By one look at your picture I could of told you that you've got a female B&G. As B&G Macaws matures, you can really tell the difference by looking at them. I have a male and a female, by having them side by side, you can really tell the difference. A breeder friend told me so many years ago before I ever got Willie 10 years ago. After seeing so many and have a pair myself, it is very evident you can see the difference between the sexes.
