Looming problem coming

I have three macaws and in the past have gotten a years supply of nuts in the shell for them at Wal-Mart after the first of the year. For about 5 years they have had bulk mixes of nuts in the shell sold by the pound. People pick all the walnuts and brazils out and leave mostly almonds which is OK by me. I would go in after the first of the year and make an offer to the produce manager for all the remaining nuts they had for $1. a pound. Some Wal-Marts would reject me, others would welcome me with open arms. This year it seems they have done away with the bulk nut department, having only bagged nuts at all the stores I have been to. Even Freshfield Farms produce no longer has Hazelnuts which my Scarlet Clifford treasures. I am looking for a new source of in-shell nuts where I can buy like 25lbs at a time cheaply. The reality is that the 'Times are a Changing' and that being able to buy in bulk is going away. This due to the concerns of the bulk product becoming contaminated and that modern accounting systems and bulk products fight each other and our World is now in full control by the Accountants.

There are a few places on the internet that provide the ability to purchase bulk, but the term 'cheaply' no longer apply. It, like bulk sales are things of the past.

Since you want to buy such a large quantity of nuts, maybe contacting some co-ops might prove helpful? Or search for bulk food stores in your area. A quick google search of where to buy bulk nuts turned up nuts.com and several other websites. I’d contact them directly regarding the amount you need to see if a true bulk discount might be available.

Perhaps I am fortunate because of where I live being on the more “eco conscious” side, but large bulk food sections are available in many stores here in Oregon and seem to be growing in popularity. I know because I buy most of our groceries bulk to reduce packaging waste (can bring home dry goods in my own reusable bags) and it also costs less than packaged. Many people here, at least, have similar sentiments towards bulk foods and it’s a very popular section at every grocery that has one. Bulk may be dying in some areas, but is alive and well elsewhere!

Also I hear there has been a huge loss of nut producing trees. Also less farmers are farming nuts as is a long term investment. Trees can take more than ten years or even close to fifty years to really produce large quantities of nuts. In my grandparents time home owners planted a walnut or pecan tree in their yard, as well as service berry, sugar berry, plum trees ECT.. consider planting your own tree.. some trees produce quicker . But you can still planning for the future. I planted plum trees they made fruit the first year and my parrot love them! I planted the small fruit native kind. And I planted blue berries..

Thank you for your ideas. I kinda wondered if the fires in California might have gotten to nut trees, and I know 98% of Hazelnuts from the USA come from Oregon. I'd like to try getting some Hazelnut tree stock as they claim it will grow in zones 4-8 We are on the warm side in North Florida. In past years the orange crop was damaged with extreme cold and many citrus farmers switched over to growing a very profitable blueberries. I have delt with nuts.com in the past for tapioca but not nuts. I will start looking at produce places and see what I can come up with. Thanks for your posts!:red:
