Hello,
My wife, two kids and I are considering to adopt a Calico Macaw. My son has been researching parrots for a year now and he really wants to adopt instead of purchasing one to give an adopted one a home. We currently have a parakeet, a dog (chesapeake bay retriever) and a saltwater aquarium.

My son has been interestd in a Conure, Eclectus, or a Cockatiel. We went to a Parrot Rescue center near our home and we were meeting different rescues and then there was Dolly, a Calico Macaw. She is 8 years old and her previous owners recently have passed away. She is very quiet for a Macaw and seems very friendly. She gently took treats from my children's hands, and they when she is nervous or does not like the situation the staff said she goes into her cage, and when she is comfortable again she will come out. They said they let two year olds hand feed her. She was very friendly, she said a few words to us.

I am little nervouse on getting such a big bird and will she be safe with my kids and any friends they have over. Will she come to like one of us to take care of her and not the rest of us, i have read some interesting stories on how some parrots love one owner and hate the other.

We have to take a parrot 101 class, training class, and a health class and they will do a home visit before they will let us adopt. So our plan is to take these classes over the next month and visit Dolly as much as we can and see how she responds to us each visit, hopefully this will help us decide if she is a right fit for our familty, and if we are the right fit for her.

Hello and welcome! I think it's wonderful that you are taking in a bird who needs a home:) I think that since you will be doing the classes, and visiting with Dolly several times, you will be able to make the best decision for all of you. I hope that it works out for you, and for Dolly. She sounds like an amazing bird! Please let us know what happens!

Welcome! Sounds like you'll have all the groundwork in place if you do decide to adopt. Just remember all birds bite at one time or another, and birds like to bond with one person. Unlike a dog, a large parrot can and will make a statement on who is allowed in their territory, and don't tolerate anybody else near their mate. However, with all the classes you are taking you should be fully prepared for any challenges you may have.

Enjoy your new bird! I hope everything goes well for you!

Welcome to the forum!!! Like Tessie mentioned above, with the parrot class your taking, it will teach you the importance, care, feed, and such. If you have any issues after you adopt that they didn't prepare you for in the class please don't hesitate to ask in here. Good luck!
