Galah
hi everyone my friend brought me around a young galah yesterday he cant fly we cant see any reason for him not to be flying as he can spread both wings and flaps them also hooves off the cage to the ground, he doesn't try to fly and doesn't seem to have any injuries or pain any where, when she brought him in he was squarking at us hissing and flapping his wings, today I sat with him and he now sits on my arm, lets me give him scratches and eats seeds from my hands. so now im thinking if he doesn't or cant fly I will keep him but when we had galahs as kids we just fed them seeds but I know this isn't the best diets so Im wondering what foods I should feed or is there a good site that I can find a good diet for him,

You don't say where you live. Are you in Australia? Is this a wild bird? My first thought is that you've got a young bird which has recently fledged and cannot yet fly upward. If the bird is older (and there's no certain way to estimate a bird's age), then it could be the bird has been kept in a small cage for a long period and is therefore unable to fly. I have such a Galah aged around 30 and he's been learning to fly for just over a year now. He can do short flights, but is not at all confident to fly downward as his landing technique sucks and he usually lands on his beak. If your bird is making continual squarking noises, it really seems to me you've got a young one, so please make sure you get it checked out by a vet to make sure it's not injured.

My Galah eats Vetafarm Nutriblend pellets (buy from petshops), fresh fruit and veggies (whatever I happen to have on hand) and a smattering of Wild Bird seed mix (buy from supermarket). If this is a young baby, though, you'll need to get more suitable baby food from the vet. If you have nothing on hand to feed the bird at the moment, you can soak some cereal in warm water and offer that. My birds enjoy a bit of blood-warm porridge as a treat, but only a teaspoonful or so and no milk or sugar added.

Let us know how you get on with birdie and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask them! It always helps to know roughly where you live so seasonal advice can be given. :)

I'm in Australia on the Sth coast , he seems young but more then a yr old, I wondered if he is someone's pet as he is sweet but not handled much if so he don't bite hard and doesn't like to sit on me but seems to want attention I will be keeping my ears out for an owner missing a galah and will asks the vets if they hear of anything, I have sunflower seeds that I buy for my horse and lots of fresh fruit and vege so I'll try him on those tomorrow and will get other stuff from the pets store in the morning
