New to parrots, new to the forum, Hello!
So ive got my first 'big' (to me) parrot; my last bird was a Lorri which im finding is very different to owning a parrot!
His names Tachyon (pun = a tachyon particle is a hypothetical particle that always travels faster then light; Alexandrines are often fatty birds (food-orientated) and so one would not think them faster then light at flying; But hes actually an amazing flyer so the pun is doubled!), hes an Alexandrine parrot, he hatched in Nov 2013 and came to us at 9mnths old on Aug 1st this year as his first owner had to move into an apartment and sadly couldnt take him (also, turns out that whilst he loved Tac, he really didnt know much about parrots so poor Tac only had one rubber dog toy to play with and dowel perches and most likely, a boring diet of just seed). Its been almost 3 months now and hooooooboy its fun but intense!
Hes trainable (for treats of course!), eats most fruits and vege with gusto, picked up how to forage straight away, and once I get him to ease up on the ear-splitting flock call, we'll be solid lol. I just bought him a new cage for his Hatchday present; its made for parrots and he wont be able to pop the welds like he could on the first cage I had for him (as well as I had no idea his feet would be so big or I would have gotten a cage with bigger bar spaces in the first place). Hes a voracious chewer of EVERYYYYTHING. If it stays still long enough he'll try and chew through it! Hell, if its moving, he'll chase it and then chew through it lol.
Im enjoying reading through the forums and picking up bits of knowledge, there is so much to know! Im really keen on providing the most well-rounded, close-to-wild, enjoyable life that I can for him; so im really in to trying to get him foods etc that he would normally be noming on in the wild (like flower blossoms etc). My mum posts me big bundles of freshly cut organic willow branches (no trees on this property, sadly), and malus (crabapple), and pinecones, every month and I keep the branches alive in water and give him one every few days to rip to bits, he loves it!
I could go on and on and on, but instead, im going to go and read more of the awesome helpful posts on the forums!
