Hi there! I've been thinking of getting a bird for a while now(had one growing up and loved her). I've recently been looking at Green Cheek Conures. I met one at the store yesterday that was super sweet. It came right out of the cage and let me walk all around the store with it and rub its head. Is this normal for a GCC or is this one pretty special? I was going to wait a few more months to get a bird, but if this one is special I'll go back and get it now. Thanks for the advise!

Welcome, GCC are a very social group, as a whole. That being said, your guy may have really taken to you! My JoJo was in a rescue for months and no one could touch him, my daughter and I walked in and he jumped on us! My photo is him on that day! They ended up giving him to us for almost nothing, had never seen him react that way before!

Remember, a GCC can be a handful! They will run your life if you let them! They tend to be nippy, but incredible love bugs!

Hi, and welcome

Green cheeks are verrrrrrrrrrry popular, and for great reason: they're usually very good pets. I would think it a GOOD sign that it's friendly and outgoing. Then again, there are no absolutes.
I'd say...
If you two really hit it off, I'd go for it. You never know when a perfectly sweet bird is just FOR SOME REASON, not gonna like somebody. So --- if you felt a connection, I'd trust that.
Besides... I think you're already in love!!!!!
So, what will you name it?

Fiboysaid they will run your life if you let them that is not true. They will run your life regardless goose has picked up an Amazon trait of everything is his. in my free time I play competitive Xbox to make some money and goose has decided that my controller and headset are his and I have to ask him permission to use them and he will only allow me to play if he is on my shoulder watching. If I do not take him if he will yell at the top of his lungs in disgust at how rude I am being. But he is an amazingly funny bird who is into everything and I couldn't imagine life without him. I say go for it i impulse bought goose(bad idea) and completely fell In love with parrots and am now have 2 GCCs and an Amazon.

Just keep in mind the bird is likely a baby and will become a hellion when it hits puberty. If you are prepared for that, great! If you take bites personally and will rehome the bird when it tries to kill you, then better to adopt an adult who has already gone through that phase.

I don't know how pick-up-able conures are right out of the box so to speak; Salty was so young he would go to just about anyone but went to me first! every time! And that was it.

It really depends on a lot of things, but most baby Conures in pet stores are so starved for attention they will do ANYTHING for a little love.

When my daughter used to work at the pet shop, The GCC were known for doing auditions for the newcomer!

Darwin-my baby girl, pineapple green cheek conure, also a rescue. RIP Darwin, dearly missed
Kiwi and Damon, the devilish lovebird twins
Charlie-Umbrella Cockatoo,
Do it! I recently lost my beloved green cheek conure. My heart was shattered because this little bird was my world. She would cuddle endlessly, demand scritches, was fearless and loyal and loved me unconditionally. I never, ever wanted a green cheek but I will never, ever regret the decision to get her. Darwin was everything we hope for in a companion parrot, but so few of us get. A green cheek is an amazing pet and if you are SERIOUS about getting a parrot and not just impulse shopping, then I would say go for it. These little parrots have a mind-boggling way of making a home in your heart with their quirky, loving personalities.
My baby umbrella cockatoo arrives tomorrow, she is a gift from family after losing my beloved Darwin (in fact the baby is named Charlie, as in Charles Darwin in my conure's honor). I am beyond excited, but if it meant just a little more time with my sweet Darwin I would give up getting my dream bird in a heartbeat.
