Welcome Dawn! So sorry you have been going through the health issues, I'm 37 and have just dealt with cancer and chronic infections from the treatments, so I feel ya, you have to deal with the illnesses and they tell you to lower stress and rest, but you also have to deal with the other issues that accompany the illnesses, like the financial ones. I'm trying to recover right now myself, and my birds have helped me more than anything else. I also lived in Charlotte for a little over a year, I don't know why I ever came back to Pennsylvania!

It is amazing how animals help us cope and heal. They are not judgmental and love us no matter what. I've had birds all my life and they've gotten me through quite a bit, they've helped more than most people, lol.

Aaaaa, the warmth and comfort of feathers in the morning, afternoon, evening and night! There is no question that recovering for a light illness or a serious illness that the love of both Humans and Pets alike aids greatly.

And, just a bit of Humor dear EllenD: You moved back to Pennsylvania because you missed the ridges and valleys, plus it's being one of a few States that the statement: 'You Can't Get There From Here!" has truth!

Don't you mean Nawth Carlina? I'm from the south, I can say that. Welcome to the forum, it's so filled with warmth and love that there's barely room to talk about the parrots. Maybe it's displaced affection - some of have problem birds, so the forum gives us the parrot love we don't get from the actual parrots. Or so I hear. I'm sorry to hear of your physical troubles, and glad that you have some feathers to keep you company.

Lol, I'll tell you, I was born and raised in central PA, and have lived here all my life except for the year and a half in Charlotte in 2006. Central PA is absolutely gorgeous, I get business reps coming in from down south, out west, etc. all the time, and they are blown away with the views of the mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, etc. And I love that State College is only 4-5 hours from Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, Cleveland, Columbus, Connecticut, Richmond, and only 3 hours or less from Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Erie, Woodstock, NY (I'm a guitar player and love the Woodstock and Bethel area). Here's my gripe:

-Cost of living in State College, which would be a rural little farming, agricultural community if not for Penn State University, is second highest in the state, only Philadelphia and it's suburbs is higher (Yes, it's cheaper to live in Pittsburgh); Charlotte easily cost HALF OR LESS than State College does in EVERYTHING, from housing to utilities to restaurants to even groceries

-i was born here and even so I'm a huge Notre Dame fan, I have been since birth, and I cannot stand Penn State or its local fans. You just have to be from here to understand why. The reason for this hatred was never so apparent than during the Sandusky scandal, I actually have been out of town and once people in a bar or at a meeting found out I was from State College they assumed I was a PSU fan, and they readily attack me....And I totally agree with them!

-Winters. November through March. Enough said.

-People from North Carolina were just so much nicer, kinder, had manners, didn't use horrible, hateful language, and were always appreciative of everything. And I mean pretty much every person I ever even spoke to. They might have been cursing me once I walked away, but they were always just kind, polite, and friendly outwardly. Two nights ago I stood in the middle of the Walmart parking lot here with a dead truck battery from leaving my lights on. I had to go back inside and buy jumper cables, popped my hood, hooked up the cables, and stood there in the dark, in the rain/sleet and a temp in the high 30's, for almost 2 hours, as no one was willing to jump my truck. Even the people parked directly in front of me and caddy corner to my truck said "I'm in a hurry" and "sorry I have somewhere to be". Others just ignored me, one group of PSU students laughed at me. This was not surprising to me at all. UHG.

So that's the end of my central PA rant. And Sailboat, I actually only moved back here because I missed my friends and family. I was making a fortune down there at the age of 26-27, had a brand new 3-bedroom, 2 and a half bath townhouse that would have cost 3x as much a month up here, and was able to live 5 minutes from downtown Charlotte and walk through the city by myself safely. I wouldn't even want to be a student at PSU, walking around campus by myself at night. There's a bit of a sexual assault problem here, as well as a heroin problem...

But I was homesick and had to come back! Ha ha ha!

I think it might be a college town thing. I don't know at what point I became old enough to be annoyed by college students, but I'm there now, lol.

I understand exactly what you're talking about, it's very weird how some people handle someone being seriously ill. Some people get nervous and don't know what to say at all, some people constantly feel bad for you, and then there are the people that don't care one bit, that blame you for the problems and inconveniences that your illness causes, and that act like you have the plague. I unfortunately had to deal with a boss that actually made fun of me having cancer in front of everyone. He used to crack jokes constantly about me missing work to do radiation treatments or have biopsies. It's amazing how heartless people can be. Like I was enjoying doing radiation treatments? Oh yeah, I might as well have been in Hawaii on the beach...UHG.

Parrots are the best medicine. I manage a few such issues myself, with help from the Rickeybird.
