Hello, All. I am happy to meet you all, but very sad overall. We lost out Moluccan Cockatoo 11 days ago and we are devastated. She died very suddenly and we were told it was a stroke or an aneurysm. She was fine and happy and on my husband's shoulder, and within 5 minutes, she was gone. It is probably the hardest thing we've been through. Now we are lost and looking for another bird. We know we can't replace Molly, but we are thinking that we'd like another M2. She was our first bird, and we don't really know much about others...We do know that we loved her snuggling at night, her funny sense of humor and her singing and dancing. We were probably unprepared for the noise, but we adjusted. (our 20 year old son, however, hated it). What should we do? Will a Macaw be as loving and funny??? Please offer opinions!

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Short answer....

Yes, macaws are loving and funny... different kind of goofy... they do tend to like to rough house a lot.

They are less needy than M2's...

Anyone who can raise a healthy, happy M2, and have it keep all its feathers will do well with any bird. Those are the neediest of the needful things... and most people cannot keep them happy.

So, mo condolences. And you'll do fine what ever bird you pick.

Two green cheek conures, one sun conure, and two quakers.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I've never had any of the bigger birds. I can't advise on what kind of bird to get. Best wishes to you!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for your loss of Molly. Many of us understand the trauma and at times obsessive replaying of their passing. Please allow yourself to grieve, knowing it will take a long while. I would personally defer getting another bird for at least a short while, but that is a highly individual choice.

Having successfully lived with a Moluccan grants you an invitation to most any species. If you are unsure, take some time to learn about others, and if possible have interaction. Should you decide on another M2, know there are scores of adoptable examples as they are among the most rehomed of parrots.
