1 Quaker Parrot (Chopper)
Hello! We are going on a sabbatical overseas for up to 1 year (leaving in July of 2024), and, as a result, are looking for long-term boarding for our pet Chopper, a healthy and happy 3-year-old Quaker parrot. Chopper is very social with humans - my husband and kids take her out daily - and is a fun and spirited companion. She is occasionally nippy, but nothing out of the ordinary, and is very used to being handled. She has a budding vocabulary (she uses the word "apple" to refer to any food, and can play "peek a boo" like a pro!).

We would need a home for chopper that is within driving distance of New York (let's say within a 5 hour drive of NYC, give or take), and of course intend to pay for her needs and care during the 1 year period. If anyone has any leads, we'd be most grateful!

Picture of Chopper included below.

oh I love quakers and would love to get to know one.

We live in NJ between half hour to one hour from NYC.

Do you live in NYC?

What's her cage situation?

Does she fly?

What's her diet like?

Do you have a vet?

Is Chopper "nippy" or is she a "chopper"?

If I can find a home for your bird can I go with you on sabbatical??
Just kidding.

This sounds like it'd be cool but I need to talk to the old ball and chain and see if we can swing it.

How do you think Chopper will be in a multi bird home?

We have a well behaved Red Lored Amazon
and a super chopper bitey Blue and Gold Macaw.

Both unclipped but neither fly.

Fantastic! We'd love to connect. We do live in NYC, so we are very close.

Here's a bit more information on Chopper: Chopper has a vet, who she sees annually (it's a requirement for short-term boarding, which we've needed on occasion). She eats ZuPreem Natural Bird Food, in addition to human food. She is at most "nippy," definitely not a "chopper" (my kids named her when we first got her, so there is no relationship between her character and her given name :). She can fly, but does so primarily to gather her flock (my kids). She has never lived in a multi-bird home, but she has always enjoyed her time with other birds when we've boarded her, so I think she might enjoy other birds very much. And did I mention that she plays chess?

She's also super helpful when on the computer:

We'd love to set up a FaceTime or zoom call if you are interested in seeing Chopper! If nothing else, I think my kids would love to hear about your Blue and Gold Macaw. Amazing!! That must be a lot of fun.

We will set up something soon.

I have a crazy busy rest of this week and then we'll talk.

Hope you are well.

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

My better half is going to take some convincing.

He is in Brasil right now, and will be back home next week.

He kind of wants to make sure you aren't looking to get rid of the bird.
I know that in no way is that what you are trying to do,
but he is not a Parrot Forum person, so he's leery.
And I am sure when he meets you and you explain he'll understand all.

We have a bit of time to bring him around
and when we commit we will go all in, no worries.

Talk to you soon.

Let's talk when you are both available! We are 100% coming back for the bird. Chopper is very much a part of our family - and my kids are very, very attached to her. (Also, my husband's a tenured professor, so you will be able to find us when we return.) But we know a year is a long time, so no pressure. Would be glad to connect and, if nothing else, we'd love to hear about having a Macaw!

I don't play chess but would like to learn.
In a years time I am sure that Chopper can teach me the basics!

The real challenge: Chopper vs Max.... ? How would it go? (If chess fails, peek-a-boo is always a winner :)

My eldest son has always wanted a Macaw - such amazing birds. We definitely want to connect - we do not know many people with birds and it is actually really fun hearing from the bird community on this forum.

Oh YES! I do know how to play peek-a -boo!!

This forum is the best.
All of the discourse in civil and the moderators make sure that it is all about helping parrots and their companions.

Hope you all can meet Max.
