Hello everyone, we are new parrot owners. We have a red front Macaw and a African gray. The African Grey we adopted has no claws or toes and does not have his flight feathers. Not sure what happened to him but he is a sweet bird. Does anyone else have a bird that has any handicaps? I am wanting some advice on excerise?:grey::grey:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and your awesome pair of parrots!

The Grey must have one heck of a story and a gift of determination. Kudos for accepting the challenge. How long have you had him, did he come with specialized accessories? Hopefully members with related experiences can offer advice.

Welcome! I have a GCC that is missing part of her one toe. The store where I bought her from went to clip her nails and took the whole thing off. Doesn't bother her at all but still upset me a lot. Good luck

A number of parrots here have challenges, ranging from missing toes to massive self-mutilation/plucking to debilitating injury histories. A certified avian vet is a very important important resource!

Thank you for taking on these two needy darlings. You're their hero, whether they know it or not!

No toes? Just stumps? How wide are his feet?

He won’t be able to hold on to a perch without toes...can you set up a platform perch for him to rest on? We have a macaw with a severe spine deformity that inhibits his freedom of movement and makes him more prone to falls. He goes down like a stone, doesn’t even try to flap. You can do a few things for him. If he will accept it, his perch can be lower in the cage, so if he falls he won’t fall far. You can put layers of corrugated cardboard around his cage in case of falls. Also, you can get these cheap interlocking closed cell foam floor pads. I’ve seen them for kids play spaces. For exercise...one of the members here, SilleIn, has a macaw that doesn’t fly because of an injury. She made a special harness to suspend him, and runs with him so that he flaps his wings.

Thanks for taking the poor baby in, and good luck!

Welcome and be welcomed. Bless you for taking in these 2 disadvantaged parrots, who always have a hard time being adopted. There are a few parronts here who have handicapped birds, even a blind one, but I don;t believe there is anyone with a parrot who is missing claws AND toes, perhaps you could describe this condition a bit more, so folks can offer you meaningful ideas. And we love pics and videos here, hint hint.
What are your parrots names?
