I have 100+ Babies

I was planning to have an early night...
then I thought "I'd better just change over the snails food bowls".
That when I found a load of little blobs stuck on the underside of the bowl. "oh they must be eggs!", I'd always planned to put any eggs outside to hatch in the wild before I had the chance to get attached. Then I saw the little blobs moving. I was too late!

I then spent the next hour or so painstakingly removing the babies from the vivarium one by one and putting them into a separate tub as the adults are capable of accidently smothering them or crushing them if they happen to fall. Once I'd removed all the crawling babies from the vivarium I then spotted a whole separate clutch of babies under the substrate against the glass. Im guessing they haven't emerged yet and I hope they don't tonight. I'm planning to get them out tomorrow, it's now 1:30am and I have work in the morning!

I've now got to convince the other half to let me keep them all...

I once had 3 snails, then 100, then hundredZSZSZS!!!! I finally GAVE them to an aquarium shop!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, the Rbird was a prime suspect in the case of several smushed little snails, so... watch Bella if she shows any interest!

Interesting. What kind of snails are they? Like the kind you find in your garden or aquatic ones from a fish store?

They're garden snails. Whenever I find an unfortunate snail that has been stepped on, I bring them in and put them into the vivarium as they can dry out pretty quick in the open air with a badly broken shell! I make the viv nice and humid and give 'em plenty of food and calcium to help rebuild their shells. The outcome... 112 babies (yes I counted them as I moved each one safely to their new nursery!)

Most of them were hanging upside down from the ceiling tonight, so I couldn't get a group photo today. But here's a couple of snaps of a few of the little guys (plus one photobombing kitten called Emily! She's a weirdo too. She plays fetch like a dog. I might have to share a video of that at some point. If you throw a ball, she just brings it right back and waits for you to throw it again - it's super cute!

I'm definitely going to be keeping Bella away from these little critters! I might try to put one baby on something for scale in a photo, because they look huge in these pictures. I could put them on a penny, or I might have a dollar in my coin collection somewhere. They are tiny, I'm pretty sure they're smaller than a grain of rice in length.

How big do those snails eventually get?

They have faces. Therefore they are people.

I spotted and removed a further 14 babies from the main vivarium last night. Im hoping I've got them all out now. So that's 126 babies and 7 adults

I wonder how fast the babies grow...

Think I'm gonna need a bigger viv...

Wow that's interesting. I've never heard of raising snails, and I have to admit they're pretty cute at that age. You never see ones that little in the wild. When I had aquariums, you really have to stay on top of it, or else the tank can become overrun with snails!

I've been quite busy recently - upgrading the pigeons loft, welcoming my new eclectus etc, but here's a couple of snaps of wee babies as promised!

They are growing VERY fast!

The dollar is from 1974 and the penny is from 1971 (I don't know if they're still the exact same size these days, so I thought I'd mention it!)

By the way - I found another 4 I think? (it was a while ago and I've slept since then!) So I think I've got 130 snail babies now!
