This is genuinely probably the hardest thread I'm going to make, but to ensure my parrot has a good future I think it's essential to make.

To be blunt, I'm not a very emotionally stable person. I have clinical depression and some days are worse then others. Despite actively getting treatment, a it's recently be getting worse hence why I feel it's of upmost importance to do this.

I genuinely feel I should have a back up owner for Lincoln. If there comes a time where I don't feel I can properly meet Lincoln's needs anymore due to my inability to properly function anymore I'd like him to go to a home where I know he'll be properly cared for and loved. I do live with my family but they aren't as interested or knowledgeable in birds as I am and I'd hate for them to be left with him and I don't think it'd be good for him.

In the case that this does happen you'd get all of his supplies. His cage, all his food, all his toys, all his treats, everything. As of now I won't ask anything of you other than to PM me if you live in Colorado, any area, if you're interested. I'll answer any questions via PM and I might like to ask a few from you.

Ouch! A bombshell! We are here!
FYI, you are not alone in your battle! I think there is something different in the wiring that makes a human a good bond with a ?bird?!
I am a member of that club!

We *ARE* with you. No matter what.
I admire your planning, even for such a scary possibility.

You are being wise. I also suffer from this condition among others and have had to make similar preparations. I'm fortunate though that my family is full of bird lovers

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I am sorry you are dealing with perhaps the most challenging issue of your life. Planning for Lincoln's well being is a caring and courageous step. Hopefully your efforts will not be necessary and you will continue to enjoy his company.

Companion animals can play a wonderful role in our lives. Perhaps your therapist can give you some guidance to help make the best decision if necessary.

Wishing you the very best for better days ahead. We are always here for you!

Thank you all for your understanding and support. I was afraid I was going to have to explain / defend myself which I was not looking forward to ><

No absolutely not, you have been honest and open and bless you for that. I am sorry. Just wish distance would allow some help to be given. Sending you my best wishes and support from afar.

I'm so sorry that you are faced with this possibility. I hope it's not something that ever has to happen, but you are being very responsible in your approach... and it's obvious that you love Lincoln very much.

Given all the members on this site, I'm sure someone will happen upon this thread who lives close enough to serve as your backup if needed.

Just know that we are all here for you in the meantime.

I'm sorry you're going through this and so sorry you're facing this difficult decision. You've earned the utmost respect by planning for a future possibility, you are obviously putting Lincoln's welfare before your own comfort. I wish I lived closer, I'd be happy to help. Wishing you and Lincoln the best possible outcome.

You know.... Every single parrot owner should do exactly this. None of us know the hour of our death, accidents happen, sudden changes happen ... And there might not be time, in the press of emergency, to find a good place for a parrot. We both have specified care and funding for Gus in our wills, and talked it over with the intended parrot. But we probably need to go a step further and identify someone in case the first choice can't take him, or it doesn't work out. It's the height of love, to plan for the well being of your bird if you ever aren't there to take care of him. I wish everyone would at least think about it and write something down.

since I have no family that wants my birds the Aviary I got them from has agreed to take my birds if the wife don't want to deal with them when I pass
made sure I had this covered before buying. I believe every parrot owner should know this before the buy goes down.

Bumping you up to the top. I live in Iowa, otherwise I would offer my help for Lincoln. It takes a lot of courage to post something like this but it is such a good idea, in case anything were to happen, you have someone that can take over and make sure Lincoln is being cared for. Kudos!

With Clinical Depression and the wide and varied swings that can occur, it is very important that you consider a Legal Document not unlike a 'Will.' This Legal Document stands in for you and provides direction when you are unable or unwilling!

Far too offen, when such a document is not available, you could /can make choices that are not in your or your Parrot's best interests. I.E., your choices are based on a short term event that you at that moment cannot see beyond. This results in your Parrot moving to the care of others. When the event passes, you find that you are without your Parrot(s) and that triggers yet another, possible worst event, which could begin to spin badly.

Far too often, those with Clinical Depression, 'need' to care for their Parrot to provide a grasp, a reason too do; to get up and care for the Parrot! A reason for this day and tomorrow and the day after!

The Legal Document steps in and provides 'Real World' control over what needs to happen based on the 'Real World' reality of your condition and not your momentary perception of your world.

There are Attorneys that specialize in this type of legal document and can provide clarity and actions based on known stages /levels. Your World can have various realities that you will not be the correct person to be making the correct choices. This allows you, today, to set the actions based on the clarity of that document and the comfort in knowing that when you cannot, it will provide for you the protection needed.

Also, consider contacting your Certified Avian Vet (CAV), for sources for the long term can of your Parrot!

Today, seeking specific legal guidance would be my first goal!

I'm not in Colorado, and I can't guarantee what my life will be like at any given moment, but if you EVER come into a situation where he needs a safe place to go while you get where you need to be, please contact me. I'll help if I can.

Again, thank you everyone. I'll try to look into legal documents and such but given my age it's unlikely I'll be able to get anything without parent assistance and I'm not sure if they'd be okay with me essentially making a will.
Right now Lincoln is largely one of my reasons to function but there's always a chance I'll loose that will to keep thriving even for him and I don't want him to suffer because of that. Silversage I'll keep you in mind, I'd be willing to drive a distance to make sure he's safe and in good hands.
Thank you everyone.
