Got a canary

Hello friends,
I fell in love with a beautiful Meyers parrot at a breeders 60 miles from home, where I purchased our green cheek Larry in early June, 2014.
In fact, I was so smitten with this Meyers that hubby and I drove back to get him the following day. Hubby was just... OK with it, but he asked me to seriously consider our relationship with Larry.
Well.... while I was looking at the Meyers and discussing things with the breeder, I started thinking about Larry and how our relationship could possibly change. I mean, I wake up in the middle of the night and can't wait for morning so I can be with Larry again lol, and how he can't wait to get to the cage door when he sees me to hop-up on my hand, cuddles, .... etc. etc. & all that other mush we go through together every chance we get
Well.... I came down off the ether while standing there and all these thoughts about Larry were crossing my mind. I decided I just couldn't change things that drastically for all of us.
In the meantime.... hubby was falling in love with a beautiful orange/yellow canary he was looking at. After all... a canary will not require the attention that a parrot requires and Larry will have the company of another bird without being distracted from us...
and that's how we ended up with Norman, our cute little canary. He is starting to sing already after only 2 days at home.
Larry and I are as in love as ever, and our relationship only grows stronger with each passing day.
I am thankful to have him, he is so precious and a joy.
I will post a picture of Norman later when I can get a decent shot in the daytime, and if he will just hold still for a second heheh

Congratulations on the new addition! I love canaries! I'd love to see his pic when you can get one.

I know they all sing a little differently depending on the type... the one they have at the bird supply store (store pet) sings beautifully, but she's not sure what 'kind' it is. I wish I could hear him all day.

Congratulations, Norman sounds like a perfect friend for all of you.

Love my canaries. I have a male red factor and two orange/yellow females. It's the males that sing that sweet canary song usally, and if you play canary songs from youtube or a CD, they will learn to sing quite well....Tom

Congratulations! I love canaries, we have 2 females that we love so much, but wow, can those males sing! I am also looking forward to a picture of Norman (and some more of Larry, too!)

Thank you Tom, I ordered a canary singing CD today per your advice. Hopefully it will help teach Norman a couple more notes

Norman is a beautiful Canary! I love his vibrant color. I'm glad he seems well adjusted and is already singing

I got a canary as well, but mine was adopted by me because of a broken leg.

Do females sing at all? Can they sing like the males but they just don't do it as often?

Should I get another Canary even though the one I have will always have a broken foot and will never regain control of it?

This is all the questions I keep asking with mine. So any advice from experienced Canary owners would be helpful for me and the OP.

By the way, congrats on the Canary! Even thou mine has a broken foot, she is still very beautiful to look at.

baron1282, I have read that the males are the predominant singers of the sex but there is the occasional female that will sing as well, but rare.
I have also read that housing more than one canary in the same cage will work most of the time, however, they will still need to be separated during the mating season. That is what I have read.
I have also read... that the best possibility of getting a male canary to sing is to get another male canary, in a separate cage, so they cannot see each other. Hmmm... lots to read out there and some information conflicts, depending which website you read.
Sooooo......... I am confused, as are you.
I got lucky with Norman, he sings off & on.
I am happy that you are willing to provide a home for the poor baby with the broken leg!
