Goku - Rainbow Lorikeet
Hi guys,

Here are some photos of the rainbow lorikeet we found on the road. He has no name yet as my boyfriend hates every name I suggest -.- So we're just calling him 'the lorikeet' and 'the bird' for now. When he first got here his beak was much darker and I THINK he looks like he grew, but maybe that's just because he's gained weight.

This is his new cage - you can kind of tell the size of it by seeing how big he looks inside. I tried to get the biggest cage possible. We're still in the process of getting more toys, better ledges, etc.

And this is our cuddle time:

Your Lorikeet is too beautiful, he looks so healthy, he still looks so young.
I went to Monti Casino Bird Park, here in South Africa yesterday.
We walked into an open aviary, where the Lorikeets were flying around us, we were feeding them. They were so tamed. I had never held one before.

This little guy was the cuddliest one, he just wanted to be held all the time.
I was in heaven and I fell in love AGAIN.

Good luck and enjoy him

Thanks, Antoinette! I'm glad he looks healthy to you, as I've been a little worried about him missing some feathers under his chin. Hopefully we can get to an avian vet this week :)

I'm glad you had fun with the lorikeets at the bird park! Do they have wild lorikeets in South Africa? You see them all over the place here in Western Australia.

Great that you are taking the bird to avian vet, sure many of your questions will be a answered. Hopefully the bird is in great health.

I surfed the net now, you guys sure are spoilt seeing them all over. I don't think we have them wild and all over the place !!!!:red1:

"The bird" is stunning!!! He needs a special name, so take your time! LOL!

Just curious, is the poop REALLY bad?

SharonC, I'd have to say yes - by my standards, anyway. In addition to projectile pooping he likes to poop OUT of his cage instead of into it, so he aims between the bars! We put some transparent rubber-type stuff on two sides of the corner cage to keep the poop from hitting the walls, but some of it is still getting out so we'll have to extend the transparent cover along the entire height of the corner sides of the cage. For the front we'll need to put the same material about 1/3 or so of the way up to keep it from flying out the front! If it just went straight down it wouldn't be so bad, though still pretty messy - the main issue is that it shoots out at an angle and right through the bars.

We're trying to potty train him, but it's slow going. One thing we're noticing (unless it's all in our heads) is that he now often seems to poop when he sees us come into the room to talk to him. He'll see one of us approaching, poop, and then we'll praise him and take him out. However he doesn't seem to understand what we're talking about when we say "go potty" yet. He also has this funny way of pooping when he's not on a perch but on a flat surface (such as on the play area at the top of the cage that you see in the photo above) - he'll start scampering backwards and forwards while squatting - few steps back, few steps forward - then back up 5-10 steps, then squat even lower and then poop. And then he'll probably walk all over the liquid/gooey puddle he's just made -.-

He's lovely and seems to be settling in well. Maybe you should just call him by his initials...TL

SharonC, you're right, the rest of him is worth some messy poop!

Thanks, Ben! I like photography as a hobby, although I'm more used to being on the other side of the camera. But I think I'm getting better :D

Yes, the name right now is the most pressing matter. I keep coming up with names but my boyfriend keeps shooting them down! We'll agree on something soon :)

:42:hello, you are really taking of your bird. a nice big cage lots of toys and branches. always go for the most natural toys and perches as possible. lories love to play outside their cages as much as possible. only give it real lori food,no pellets or seeds. they love fruit and vegatables and a little honey once a month.take it to a vet once a year for a checkup and a DNA test to determine sex. good luck

Hi guys,

I haven't been here in a while, everything's been really hectic around here so I only visit forums intermittedly. Thanks for your kind comments!

We are actually considering getting a larger cage for him as we aren't sure if his current one is too small. He hasn't grown to be huge, but he's definitely bigger than when we got him and we're away at work for a lot of the day. He's out on top of his cage or with us when we're home, but we're worried that he might just get too bored or cramped when he's alone during the day.

We also noticed that Goku is so curious about other animals, sometimes I think he has a death wish. He loves standing near the back door and talking to my dog (sometimes gets upset when she loses interest and walks away) and when the neighborhood cat sits outside the front door flywire he flies over onto the flywire to investigate. My dog really likes him and is great around my mom's cockatiel so we're thinking about seeing how they do in the same room one of these days (with a muzzle and a leash on the dog, just in case). He is definitely not meeting the cat :p
