I thought this might be interesting to chat about. By "products" I guess I am referring to your pellet/seed mixes or treats, as opposed to your fresh foods, sprouted seeds, egg-food or "chop".

Living in South Africa, I don't have access to all the beloved brands like Harrisons, Higgins etc. It would be insanely expensive to import them here, and even so I think there has been quite strict import taxes applied on a lot of pet food products.

Instead, I feed Versele-Laga, a European brand that is available in most exotic pet shops here. I use their food that is made up of both small enriched pellets and seeds, and my birds have thrived on it for years (along with their fresh veggies and fruit and what not). There are a bunch of mixes that are catered to specific species. I use both the Premium Prestige Budgie mix and the Premium Prestige Cockatiel mix.

I often feel bad because I don't feed pellets in isolation (without seeds), because it's been drilled into me that SEEDS ARE ALWAYS BAD, but there are really very little options here, especially for smaller species. There are very few local brands that even make pellets for smaller birds like budgies and cockatiels, and Versele-Laga does but for some reason their smaller-pellet brands aren't really imported here. If you have a larger parrot, it is much easier to get a great pellet brand here.

So yeah. I trust this brand, it has kept my birds healthy - and even though it is not a complete pellet mix and does contain seeds, I still think that it is enriched with all the good stuff.

Anyway, I'm just curious about what is available in different countries and what not! So for any non-US members, what products/mixes/brands do you feed your birds?

P.S. I don't want negativity and people coming and saying hurtful things about the fact that my birds are not on a full-pellet diet. The diet they are currently on is approved by their avian vet, and they are very healthy and happy little birds! There is more to their diet than this mix of course - they get fresh foods daily, as well as boiled egg/egg food every now and then, and I have always been very careful with their diets. I would rather feed them a diet that has been specifically designed and formulated for budgies and cockatiels, as opposed to somehow trying to make a larger pellet brand not suited to their needs work. Positivity please!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Just want to chime in to say you're doing a wonderful job with your birds. We can only acquire the resources available in our area! Seems you are conscientious and compensating in ways that are possible.

I am in Canada, and we have access to most of the different brands of food. I like Versele-Laga, we used to feed one kind to my laughing thrush until there was a problem with getting it imported here.

I'm in the UK, while Harrisons' food is available to me my bird won't eat pellets. I've been slowly converting him away from a purely seed diet slowly so I'm using food that's a mixture.
At the moment I'm trying out Living World premium cockateil mix. It contains some sunflower seeds but is a good mixture of dry vegetables, fruit and pellets too.
I bought some vitakraft Australian mix but... It isn't really that good. It contains quite a lot of Grit which I see as just added weight with no nutritional value. He has access to other sources for it when he needs it so I'm probably not going to get it again.
The vitakraft treat sticks and snack/treat mixes are pretty good though. I use the sticks that are good for chewing on. They last quite a while with my cockatiel.

Hi, donā€™t worry, this isnā€™t FB!
My JoJo gets seeds every day, 50/50 sprouted.
Now if you said your babies were on a diet of peanuts and sunflower seed, you might get a few recommendations!

Currently I have none, but I have the capacity to adopt a minimum and maximum of two budgies - preferably a bonded pair or two males.
When I had budgies and even for my cockatiel, I never buy any branded food. I used to feed my budgies a staple diet consisting of

1. 3 parts Foxtail millet
2. 2 parts finger millet
3. 1 part pearl millet

along with supplements of greens and veggies.

Now for my cockatiel a wide variety of other millets including Kodo, Little, Barnyard etc are now easily available. But the core part of the diet is still Foxtail millet.

My cockatiel does not touch finger millet at all.

Hi, I'm from Latin America so I too know the difficulties of finding good-quality pellets and food. I have an amazon, so I try to feed her mainly fresh fruits and veggies, alongside some chop mix -which contains some seeds, sprouts and quinoa/pasta aside from the chopped fruits and vegetables- and sort it through the year/semester with the pellets I import -in big quantity once or twice a year so I can go around the expenses and because its really complicated to import pet food if you don't registrate it as something you will resell, which is weair but yeah-. I hope this was useful, and I am really happy you take such good care of your birds!
