Just recently bought a parrotlet and it's his first night here. I've tried putting him inside his cage but for over an hour, he was stuck to the wall of the cage with his legs firmly and stubbornly grabbing the bars. I figured he'd tire himself out but no good.

He flies around so much and he sometimes do dangerous things like flying into stuff or fly and settle on me. He could injure himself or I might accidentally injure him while I'm sleeping if he flies next to me.

I'm totally lost as to what to do. If I leave him in his cage, will he eventually settle down and sleep on one of the perches? It's a big, sizable cage with plenty of comfortable perches (wrapped in cloth), toys, food, snacks, and water. I don't understand why he hates it so much

Hello! Welcome to the forum to both you and your new friend! I don't think its that the parrotlet hates his cage, its that everything is new (including the cage) and he is likely scared and nervous. His cage and you house are not yet home and safe! Sticking to the side of the cage feels comfortable right now so that's what he's doing - mine would also hang onto the side to better see what was going on outside of the cage as well so its not always a sign that they hate their cage. With some time, he will start to relax and explore his cage. They do like to hang out on the bars as well - they are acrobatic little birds. I would leave him in his cage overnight, don't worry too much. I would cover it if you're able and put it somewhere dark and quiet so that he can get a good sleep. You will see that if you are patient he will start to relax more and soon you'll wonder when he'll stop moving around and exploring his cage. Please feel free to ask any other questions you might have and post some pictures. :)

You'll find within a few days his temperament change as he starts to settle in. Mine has a "bed" in her cage. I left her in there for a week when we first got her (although she was used to being cage bound and even though she preferred to be out she hated all of us and just kept looking around for possible attacking cats so might be different for yours) mine took a good month to finally settle in and relax and figure out nothing here was going to hurt her and the thing with the big ears and puff ball tail (tried to bite the poor Bunny's tail and all she got was a beak full of fur) was not a cat. Now that she's been here for almost a year we just leave the door open. She goes to bed at about 7ish in her cage. Takes some time and he'll need to get used to the place. They are as smart as a 3 yr old remember so teach him where his spot is and where he should sleep even if it means putting him in there and leaving him quiet for a while a few times a day. If you're in the room then he's going to want to be with you.
