Archie - a Jardine's Parrot, about 5 years old
Archie sometimes has a bit of trouble with his right foot. His outer toe, the one that faces backwards, sometimes refuses to point the right way. The toe seems to curl up and he doesn't seem able to raise his foot high enough to allow it to straighten it out and face backwards. Instead the toe curls up and faces forward. This doesn't happen all the time, infact most of the time he has no problem at all.

Archie is not bothered with this at all although it can be funny when he walks in a straight line and suddenly finds himself turning left (never right), he looks most puzzled.

Does anyone else have toes that don't behave as they should?

My blue crown Tootsie has two toes that like to cross each other. The forward ones on her left foot. I'm often gently uncrossing them for her. She has a toe on her other foot that does not bend hardly at all and is angled slightly outward. That one was caused by a bad vet who trimmed her nails and probably broke or dislocated the joint. Which he denied, of course. And she has a back inside toe on her left foot that is missing a nail. No idea what happened there. I've known her for nearly 25 years now and it has always been missing. The only one that occasionally seems to affect her climbing around is the broken one. But for the most part she does not have any issues at all.

Next time you speak to your vet you might want to ask them about it just to get a record so you can monitor it over time.

Thank you.

If Tootsie has managed for all that time with her feet then I am sure Archie will be fine. It is amazing how animals (and people too) can compensate for deformities. I suppose I just worry incase there is something going on that I cannot see, but I expect that Archie doesn't even give it a second thought.

Thanks once again

There is a hawk headed parrot in my favorite bird store that one of the employees adopted as a rescue who has really bad feet. Both of them are missing toes and nails but he gets around his cage just fine. He has had a hard life and is permanently plucked on the chest. But he has a wonderful and gentle disposition. He is a good example of just how they can overcome such injuries and still thrive.

I always make a point of going back to visit him whenever I'm in the store. He likes to tell me "I love you!" every time I'm there. :)
