My local bird rescue has a pretty little quaker looking for a home and i am considering adopting her but i have never seen a quaker nor do i know much about them so i am wondering what people who have them think of them what are the pros and cons of living with a quaker?

Noise does not bother me so thats not a problem other than that i would love to know more about them. I wont be adopting any new birds for at least a month but want to be prepared for when i do adopt another bird

I am in Canada (vancouver bc) as far as i know they are not illegal here.

I dont think the rescue in my city would be offering them if they were not allowed as they only do local adoptions but i will check on it thanks

They're great talkers and they can form a strong bond with one person only if your not careful. My uncle had one for years and swore it was the best bird he ever had, but I personally have never owned one yet (but I would). That bird would cuddle all over him, I would get it if I were you.

I have a male eight month old quaker and he is really affectionate, likes nothing more than to be close to me and getting his neck scratched. He is also extremely quick at learning new tricks and is very tolerant of my two young children. Thumbs up from me! :)

RIP Shrek: Quaker
Shrek would give me a facial every day, removing all the stray hairs from my face, which at my age were quite a few... He also talked, saying 'byebye', when I picked up my keys... 'nightynite', when I turned out the light.... 'Whatchadoing', when I worked in the kitchen, as well as many other words...

He bit me once, when my daughter was here.,.. She touched me on the arm, while Shrek was on my shoulder... Shrek bit my cheek, telling me 'DANGER, FLY AWAY!'

I still can't have another quaker, but I would certainly recommend them to anyone, who wants a large parrot in a small body.

If the noise doesn't bother you, then I would go for it. They are wonderful little birds and can be good talkers.
I am getting ready to take in a problem quaker that a friend has. She took him in, but she doesn't have a lot of room. He's not so friendly to most people and she hasn't been able to re-home him because he scares everybody.
From what I know of them, this isn't normally the way they are. Usually they are affectionate and friendly, so I would do it.

i love quakers, i would get one in a heart beat if i could. they are very personable and very funny. they are individuals and every bird is different. thy are very territorial of their cages, but once they're out, they're fine. they just love their people, and their people are crazy about them!

It's difficult to generalize about Quakers (or any kind of parrots), since their individual character and personalities can be very different. My QP Ralph is not loud or noisy at all, and he isn't cage territorial (he is very possessive of his food dish though). Ralph is very intelligent, curious, playful and adventurous. He's quite affectionate in his own way, but isn't really a cuddly parrot. He has learned a lot of words, but doesn't talk a lot; he enjoys making clicking sounds more than talking. He understands even more words than he knows how to say. He can be very stubborn and impatient at times, he hates anything that's orange, and he's very fussy about his food. He makes life a lot more fun and interesting for me, and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. :)

yes parrots are quite like people they have their own personalities thats for sure!

Its weird i have always been a large bird person and never really looked twice at small birds then i met a conure and fell in love now that i havea conure i am exploring all the smaller parrots and am finding out there are a lot of really interesting species i had never thought about some i had never heard of and am liking the small ones more and more

the quaker i have been looking at is named xena and seems like a sweet girl i will have to try to set up a meeting to see if we connect and put a deposit on her until after i have my surgery.

The shelter charges between $300 - $600 for quakers, conures and other similar sized parrots i dont know what her adoption fee will be on that spectrum but the nice thing is they come with their cage of appropriate size and their toys etc..

I know i could easily get a better price for a baby quaker and get a cage cheap off craigslist but she seems so sweet and needs a home. Im not sure if she has been with the shelter a long time but i know some of their larger birds have been in foster care for years. Its so sad some have been in care so long but that being said the shelter does a good job in placing the parrots with the right home when the animals do leave the shelter they do home visits and inspections people have to provide vet refrences if at all possible especially if there are already pets in the home to prove that the parrot is going to a responsible loving home.

I think u r ok there then.

Sorry with local to me I am on the boarder of 2 states PA and Maryland. I can't have them in PA but 20 mins from me in Maryland they can. Just hate what they do to the birds here in PA if they find them and don't want to see a bird put down for no reason.

Good luck!

I have 4 Quakers, as well as 2 other parrots, I love Quakers, all 4 of mine, have different personalities, & 3 are cuddlebugs.I have only 1 that is cage agressive, the others are not, I don't find mine loud ( guess I am used to them ) They flock call to me in the mournings for a short time, then in the afternoon, when they know its supper time, 3 of mine talks, & 2 even sings too, I love them alot, they are so much fun, and they make me smile daily. My oldest is 11 yrs old, & my youngest is 3 yrs, I have had 3 of them since babies & Jake I got just 2 yrs ago, hes my rehome, what a great change in him, to see him now, just melts my heart as he is now a happy quaker again.

I had a Blue Quaker. He was a great bird. Could be nippy inside his cage, but, a sweetheart otherwise. Like others here, he talked, cuddled, and whistled a lot. If she accepts you, go for it.

I don't have a quaker but the ones I've played with and been around are all so different! I've seen 2 brothers fight over a wooden bead then snuggle up in the corner together for a nap a few minutes later. I've seen 6 quakers all climb up one rope to the ceiling and get into a screaming contest with the macaw across the store and a "top of the world/ind of the mountain" competition with the neighboring conures and goofy pair of lories... to say the least... they WON.. hands down. haha I think I could deal with a macaw yelling at me before a quaker... They can be quite cuddly (as with all birds) and can learn to talk with ease (but all birds talk :) ) but I've never seen a quiet quaker haha

I have 4 Quakers, they are fun birds, they are like comical clowns, 3 of mine talk, I don't find mine loud at all, they will " flock call" when I wake up, and then at supper time, but they are quite good at entertaining themselves, till its playtime out of their cages. i have 1 thats a plucker, but as long as I keep many toys stocked up on her favorites, she tends to pluck less, I love mine very much, my oldest is 11 yrs, youngest is 3 yrs. They are very affectionate to me, & most of them are cuddlebugs, some of them, have funny habits, they make me laugh alot.

I am a new quaker parront. I have had mine for about three weeks. In such a short time he has done so much. My family and I just love him to death. He is wonderful. He is very sweet, although he has not been so affectionate yet , but I'm sure that as he settles in with the family he will be a true love bug. I have found that he is usually noisey in the early morning when he first gets up and in the evening usually late afternoon around 4pm for about hour then he chills out again for the rest of the evening.:green2::)

2 yr old Male. Quaker
I found my quaker kiwi on the internet. And I'm so glad I did! He has adapted to the new scenery very well he still wants to bite a little too much but he's getting better. He definitely demands attention as do most quakers. Keep that in mind if you aren't home for extended hours at a time don't get a quaker. They need stimulation or they will act out, plucking, screaching. Ect. But if I'm still trying to find out a good brand of pellet that he will eat. All he wants is seed. Good luck with her. :)

Lucky, Quaker, abt 18/male?
Previous birds: 2 Quakers, 2 budgies, Nanday conure, Indian ringneck, 2 tiels, Red Lory, 300+ finches.
I've had Mark for about 20 years. I thought she was a he at first because she was so rotten. She had been at the pet store where I sold the finches I bred for about a year. She was cage-crazy and always ran down to try to bite me, then acted unhappy when I turned to leave. So being in my less-than-prudent 20's I figured what's $99?

It took a solid 6 months to get Mark hand tame, and part of what helped was that a tiel I rescued had psittacosis and we all had to go on meds (me, tiel, Mark and 300 finches). Mark liked the taste of the meds and we bonded over a syringe of pink antibiotics.

Over the years I learned that not every quaker is a good talker. Mark only says maybe 10 words in a mumbly voice. But she does tricks like flapping on command, take a bow, wave, etc. She is bitey sometimes, but never bites faces. Sweet often. When I've been sad or had migraines, she will look right in my eyes and make soothing sounds & want to cuddle. She likes car rides and climbing around in trees. She is also great at projectile pooping as commentary. On our shoes left by the back door (near their cage), on the freshly mopped floor, washed wall, etc.

We also adopted a stray quaker a few years ago. She plucks a bit, is nervous and twitchy, is obsessive about her happy hut, doesn't want to be handled at all. She has a great vocabulary and seems to use her words in context. She says dammit for loud noises, the vacuum cleaner, when we drop something or yell at the dogs. But if we mess with her happy hut or tell her NO, she calls us the F word. She's very bossy, telling the dogs what to do, giving orders to the cats, etc.

I like quakers though. Bossy, loud, opinionated, smug, and very entertaining :)
