A Quaker parrot
Hi, I have a Quaker Parrot named Honey, I found her in my garage a year ago and my mom let me keep her because it was Summer in Arizona and there where a lot of Feral Cats in the neighborhood. She is good at stepping up and talking (giving kisses, saying hello etc) But she doesn't trust me. I see people all the time holding their Quakers and opening their wings or cuddling with their Quakers. Honey hates when I try to do that, she starts breathing really fast and try to get away from me or trying to get on my shoulder. I tried leaving her alone but she still will bite me. If I have my glasses on or if I put my hair up she acts like she doesn't know who I am and attacks me. She almost put a hole in my lip when I tried to kiss her and I had my hair up and had my glasses on. She also freaks out when I'm talking to a friend, doing homework, or watching t.v., she also screams her head off when I leave my room or sit at my desk to draw. Can someone please help shes my first bird and my mom says if I cant figure this out we might have to give her away and I love her to much.

Hello fellow Arizonan! Parrots are very delicate little creatures who need a whole lot of patience. You say she steps up and that is an amazing start! Is there a treat she likes a lot? Try giving her a treat with your glasses on and hair up! Talk to her lots and give her your undivided attention for at least an hour each day. Don't push any pets or cuddles just yet....she will let you know when she is ready. Does she have a lot of toys that she plays with? Give her something to distract her when you leave the room. Is there any way you can give her a perch to hand out with you while you do homework? Parrots love being a part of everything you are doing. Of course she can't do everything with you but letting her be a part of what she can will really help the screaming.

My JoJo, GCC, is supposed to be a cuddle bomb, but is very hand shy also! Will sit on my shoulder for hours, pressed into my neck, but if I try to hold, grip, her, I can see the panic and clostrophobic reaction, and have to respect/understand it. In my world, I want to hug her and smother her with kisses. In her world, she relives baggage she needs to forget! I have found, right after a bath, she is very receptive to cuddling!
