breeding indian ringnecks in indoor cage please help?
Hello I have bought a bonded pair of blue ringnecks from a local pet shop who had them breeding in a cage in the shop , we have now got them in our bedroom and put a nesbox on the side which is 12inch square and 24inch deep with mesh ladder on the side , in the filled about 6inches up with nesting material like a strandy hair material and wood shavings but they have pulled nearly it all out. Both regularly go into the box and are always with each other preening each other and soft chirping .
Will they breed inside our bedroom? I currently feed and change their water and clean them everday other than that and covering them up at night there is no going in cage or interacting with them at all .
Should I clean the cage less and maybe just do their food every 2 days ?
how can I tell if they is gunna be eggs soon ? Any behavior changes in any of them if theres gunna be eggs in a couple of days or so ?
How long after mating is it before eggs are layed? Or how can I tell if they will be no eggs ?
Anybody bred ringnecks in a indoor cage any useful advice would be greatfull

Hello & welcome to the forums.....

A couple of questions come to mind about your new feathered friends, how old are they; how long have they been together; how long have you had them? One other question I have is why do you want to breed your ringnecks?

Although your a pair of parents might be able to raise a clutch of chicks in your nestbox, it is a bit small...ringnecks are between 14" and 17" long, so when their chicks wean, the parent's tails are going to look a bit ratty, from getting brushed against walls when turning around inside.....as to the nesting material, it sounds like you've used a type of packing material called/referred to as excelsior.....depending on what it was originally used for, it could be dangerous to your birds and their chicks.....some of this types of this material had been treated with insecticide which could cause deformities and/or kill the chicks & their parents.....you might be wiser to offer her some balled up newspapers they can shred.....

It is not unusual for a nesting hen to remove what you think she should use & rearrange everything.....how many houses have you been in where the woman of the house has allowed a man to decorate it ? ? ?

As long as your birds are mature enough to produce viable chicks, a hen should produce eggs 5-7 days after mating, but mating alone will not guarantee eggs will be produced and the laying of eggs will not insure that you will have chicks hatching within a month.....if your birds are not fully mature or any eggs are their first clutch, it might take them one or two clutches before they get it right a produce chicks.....just because they go into the box together or even if they practice mating in the box, there is no guarantee that viable chicks will result.....

I posted the same thing to your other post...since they are the same, I figured the needed the same reply, because there are some potential issues with your project.....

I did post the same question twice in different sections of the forum because I couldn't find one for breeding . I don't really know the age of the birds but I know defo they are male and female, they had chicks of them 2 years ago in the shop we got them from , we went lookin around for a hand reared bird at the time but didn't get one from there . That was the last time we went in apart from about a month ago when we went in again and seen the parents for sale , so I know they've bred before .
The nesting material I put in is one from jollyes pet store says for all birds , that's mostly been ripped out not and theres about of inch of wood shavings left ..
have you bred ringnecks before ?

Sorry Malibu, I've never bread ringnecks.....however, since you know your birds have produced young before, their interest in your nestbox could indicate that they will produce for you, you're just going to have to wait & see how things work out.....

If these birds have previously been breeding birds and not been pets, you may have you job of making them pet birds cut out for you, but your earlier question about food and water, as long as you just change to food & water dishes, the longer they are with you, the more comfortable they will be with you & will probably let you clean the cage, but watch them while you're doing it.....

I wasn't familiar with Jollyes', so looked it up, but you also need to be careful of wood shavings also, even when sold as nest bedding for pets.....pine and cedar are bar for nesting birds as their sap can cause severe skin irritation, breathing problems & even death, most evergreen wood shavings have a sap problem, but aspen shavings are safe...ground corncobs are dangerous to birds because some parents will feed them to the chicks, often causing crop impaction...balled up newspapers are generally accepted as a safe nesting medium that the birds can shred & chew to their pleasure.....

I can only type small replys because I'm on my mobile and its not good for typing LOL , I'm not intrested in having them as pets I know that'll never be possible I want them as breeding birds I'm gunna leave them in our bedroom till the end of this breeding season (in th UK) and if they don't breed put them in our shed and build a aviary on the side for none breeding season .
They've bred in a pet shop in a cage with different people coming in and out and loud noises everywhere so hoping they feel more settled here and breed .
They was alot more scruffy and dull when we first brought them home about a month and half ago we've had them on fruti parrot mix , mixed with cockatiel mix , mixed with e.m.p studios and freshh fruit and veg everday topped up with Johnson's vit-min drops .
and they next to the window which is south facing so plenty of sunlight , (they won't of got any in the middle of the petshop because no light ccan get there) , they are much more bright blue ! With straighter and neater looking tails !
also I clean the bottom of the cage everday and they've gone from flapping and shaking to just sat at top of there rope just looking ..
