Female lovebird coming soon!
Hi all,

I'm thinking about showing my Indian Ringneck tomorrow in a local bird show for fun. My only concern is the 'holding cages'. Can Ringnecks catch diseases just by being in the same holding cage another bird has used? I'm a little worried about this.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

-L :)

Baxter - Illiger's Macaw (hatch date 5.1.15);

Taylor - Black capped Conure (RIP 3.14.15 - miss you every day little "Girlie")
I'm not an expert but I completely agree with Wendy.

I'm almost positive that my precious Taylor caught PDD from a cage she was in when we boarded her while on vacation. She never had any other contact with birds other than boarding.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know if another bird has PDD (or ABV) without testing and the birds can be carrying it without showing any symptoms! My vet said there is still so much we don't know about the disease but it is thought that it is transmitted through the birds droppings (fresh or dried).

If i loved my pet parrot i would never expose her to other birds, especially at a "bird show". Not only that but you could bring home a fatal disease without taking her. yes, i do go to bird shows/fairs BUT i'm very aware and don't handle birds or even get too close. I throw my "slaps" in a tub of clorax and wash my clothes/ take a shower. Even then i watch my pets like a hawk encase i brought home some crazy disease. I wouldn't take this decision lightly.

My mom maintains that in the 40+ years she's kept parrots, the reason none of them have ever been caught so much as a cold is because she keeps them away from other birds.

It's just asking for trouble to expose your birds to something like that. I'm sure there are online photo contests you could enter her in:)

Is it safe to ATTEND a bird fair? There is one in my area this weekend and I wanted to check it. I'm not sure if there will be birds or not. I had assumed there would be and I wasn't going to bring Pepper but is it unsafe for ME to go as well? I would hate to bring home something from wanting to check out cages and foods. [emoji19]

Please see our Captain's (henpecked) post just 2 or so above your question. ;)

There is never a guarantee of being 100% safe, however, if you'd like to attend a bird show, fair, mart, etc. follow Henpecked's advice for sanitizing one's self :). Same with if you feel you 'need' to buy something there, if it were me, I wouldn't risk buying anything shreddable or otherwise can't be thoroughly saturated and dried to sanitize.

They have done studies some years back, where swabs were taken and cultured from various bird mart environments such as tables, even tables not selling birds, floor, etc. across the country (US). Every mart had some potentially deadly virus, although not all the marts had all the same ones. So with all the info in this thread, you can decide for yourself if you'd like to attend. You won't necessarily come home with a virus, many people don't. But the risk is there.

Yikes. I was going hoping to meet other bird people in my area and to potentially find fun/unique ideas for my house.

I've been to tons of the dog fairs over the years so I was guessing this would be similar. I wasn't bringing Pepper but didn't think about ME handling birds (of course I would wash up/change clothing) or buying unused cages/toys. Wow!!!! I'm so, so glad I clicked here. [emoji15][emoji106]🏼 I will still attend but will probably wear throw away clothing and shoes. I'm buying new summer shoes today and have tons of "bird" worn shirts/shorts. [emoji6]

Thank you so much!! [emoji179][emoji8]

I knew birds were much more sensitive but I didn't think to that level. This forum has educated me in so many ways!
