What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

Sponsored Links
Here I am again! Lol

So as it stands, my 16 week old Sun conure, Sammy's diet is as follows:

-5% Seeds (I have a small bowl in his cage filled about a quarter of the way full of seed mix. He's not too fond of it anyways lol)
-75% pellets(ZuPreem fruit blend... I'm looking for a more natural alternative at the moment)
-20% fruits (Apples and grapes)

So as I see it it's pretty unbalanced. I know how beneficial fruits and veggies can be to them, so what can I get him for more variety?

Sammy would DIE for Apples LOL (I always peel and cut up any I give to him... doing a double check for any seeds at all) he also enjoys green, seedless grapes. I've given him very small pieces of red and yellow peppers and he seemed to just be licking them. He didn't like pineapples at all, lmao. But that's about all I've been able to give him.

Re: What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

Peppers are a great source of vitamins AND they're easy to offer.
Common wisdom is that parrots have such poor taste and smell that hot peppers really excite and stimulate them. And they're very healthy (lots of good green and great nutrents)! So I give the Rickeybird lots! The only downside... when he eats a pepper, then preens, then wants to cudddle, it's a very incendiary experience.
I buy several kinds...
Poblanos, to stuff the end between the bars tightly (above a perch) so the Rbird can nibble at his leisure.
Jalapenos and Serranos, to toss into the cage's snack-bowl, to trick him into entering so I can shut the door. There's no such thing as a chile that isn't good for them. If he absolutely does NOT want to go back into his cage, a big fat Anaheim will always do the trick.
I posted a video of the bird eating one in the thread about beak flavors, and you can hear me sneezing!

Re: What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

Veggies are an important part of the diet. Here's a comprehensive list: Bird Safe Fresh Foods & Toxic Food Lists + Sprouts

Not unusual for birds to be picky eaters and it may take trial and error to learn what he enjoys. Most of my flock enjoys corn, but it is one of the least nutritious choices - they get small amounts! Peas, blackeyed peas, various beans such as lima, pinto, garbanzo, and black, edamame pods, yams, and sweet potatoes are favorites. Whole grain pasta, such as spiral noodles are popular. Best is 100% whole wheat or other grain, and many are infused with veggies. Hands down favorite is Ronzoni with supergreens!

Birds love to eat as a flock, and you are part of Sammy's flock. Prepare a bowl of veggies/fruits for each and start eating with him. Make visual gestures of enjoyment, "Mmmmm" sounds, bouncing your head. Bring out your inner 6-year old!!

Re: What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

I have found that using a mini chopper is essential, love my Ninja! If it is cut small then it is harder for them to pick and choose so easily. Please make the veggies and fruits the bigger % being fed?

Loads of ideas here http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-food-recipes-diet/

Re: What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

I found food to be the trickiest part due to early mornings. I normally would give a bowl of a couple slithers of banana, grape, apple and maybe an orange slice if I had one in the morning. Then before leaving would swap out for pellets with a couple dried veggies. Then in the evening they would get some veggies, peppers, cucumber, sweetcorn, peas, carrots, broccoli which I'd keep in whilst I made and ate my dinner. I would then put in a little bit of seed to snack on which I would leave till morning when the process would start again.

Of course he wasn't round long enough for me to see if this was good for him but it felt like a decent diet. He would never touch the grapes but I'd often munch any leftovers from his bowl of fruit instead of chucking it in the bin

Re: What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

My bird eats apples, oranges, strawberries, and sweet peppers, the kind you buy in a bag; I don't give him hot peppers. Basically we just share them, I've been eating healthier since I got my conure.

Update! I bought a container of mixes fruits and tried them on him. After not long of eating in front of him and "MMMMM!"'s he started devouring all of them. So happy!

Re: What fruits & veggies to feed my Sun conure?

That is good news. Just some info really, I always wash everything I give Plum, even prepared fruit for me or him. It has been handled a fair bit to achieve the nice even pieces.

Hoping Sammy like his veggies too? Some ideas for you:- spinach, watercress, field lettuce, poppy, chickweed, dandelions, carrots, corn on the cob, peas, endives and sweet potatoes.
