Aviary Size/Appropriate Birds

I have a chicken coop that I intend to convert to an aviary. Dimensions are 10' x 8' x 6.5'tall. The hens 100% free range and prefer to live in the barn so it's sitting unused. We are very rural, living in the country but with a sturdy game-fence around the perimeter and have never had a problem with varmints, etc. I am looking for a recommendation on the best types of birds to keep outdoors. We are in Deep South Texas so it is mostly HOT, with temps RARELY below freezing in winter. The enclosure also has a 4' x 4' wooden nesting box that is completely enclosed. In my perfect world, I would have birds that are pretty to watch (bright colors), easy to keep, and that will make some noise. I'd like to listen to them. I don't want something that needs constant human interaction. Ideally I'd be able to get a couple of birds that would be happy together and be fun to watch. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums! I'm not very familiar with the best type of outdoor aviary birds for your climate, but other members can give guidance.

Please check the wire mesh material, as galvanized steel is not appropriate. The galvanizing process deposits zinc and sometimes other heavy metals that are deadly for birds. While chickens may see it as a perimeter and avoid, birds enjoy clinging to and/or playing with wire mesh, often licking with their beaks.

I agree with Scott that galvanised steel is a no-no.

In terms of birds, budgies are lovely to keep outdoors! They are native to the Australian outback and can withstand hot weather. I live in South Africa and it gets HOT here, and as long as they have plenty of places to bathe, drink and have shade in their aviary they will be absolutely fine. They also will need a roof over their heads, of course. In extreme hot weather I tend to spray them down with a spray bottle to help them cool down. In winter when it is colder, we pull down the shade coverings around the aviary (plastic with heavy duty tarp) and turn on a heat-lamp if it is necessary.

You can get them in (basically) all colours of the rainbow, and their tweeting is lovely! I have 20 in my outdoor aviary and I love to hear them every day. They also have silly personalities and are super cute to watch and spend time with.
