Long car ride tips?

If everything goes as planned, I will be getting a baby Indian Ringneck within the next few weeks, as soon as he is fully weaned.

The breeder lives about 4 hours away, and I will be picking my baby up from her there. I think I am going to use an old small parakeet cage with a perch in it for transport, is this acceptable? And is there anything else I can do to make the long journey less stressful for my bird?

Small cage or carrier is fine. No hanging toys. Make sure to take some of the breeder's food with you, including fresh foods, for in the cage. Towel if necessary to cover. Bottled water.

To add to above, padding the bottom of the cage with a towel will make the ride more comfortable since the baby bird might be a little unsteady with the new travel cage set up. Good luck!

We drove just over 2hrs to get Quincy...he was such a good bird on the way home, he just sat on our shoulders and hands the whole way....we had a little travel cage just in case though.

Thank you so much! I have been wanting an Indian Ringneck for a few years now, and I have been doing as much research as I can.

Today I got the call that my downpayment went through, so it is official and I will be getting my birdie! I am so excited. It will be about another 3 weeks, as he is still taking formula, 2 and sometimes 3 feedings a day. I am very okay with this, as I want him to be weaned on his own terms, as is best.

I would recommend bringing a second person when picking up your new little buddy.
Have him/her sit next to cage in the back seat.
When you are driving you can’t give the bird much attention.
I had a case once when going to the vet that my bird got a claw stuck in the corner of the cage. If you are the only one there it could be a bad and stressful situation.
