Iā€™ve had my parakeet Sprite for a few months now and he likes me I think, when I sing to him he comes close to me and sings along and and heā€™s not afraid when I come close to the cage but heā€™s absolutely terrified of my hands. Iā€™ve tried everything, Iā€™ve tried leaving them near the cage and Iā€™ve tried bringing them in the cage with food (he loves millet) and he wonā€™t come near them, he stays as far as he can. Will getting him a cage mate help? Or will that make it worse? I really want to have a good bond with him and get to play with him and stuff

Welcome to the Forum to you and your parakeet. I have a budgie who is not tame but he is slowly starting to become more trusting.

Iā€™m sure many of our members will be happy to help solve your issue ;)

I am 71, married and fairly private. I have PM privileges but prefer the phone. Printed messages, are so limited. jh
Go to top of the page and click on forums, scroll down to Training and skim thru titles that have trust and new birds, etc ... in them and read or watch. On you tube use the search window with parrot trust ... etc and watch those. The process of it losing it's fear may take awhile. Keeping it to scheduled times will help, treats and an "always" even disposition will help. Then you will be amazed. jh

Patience patience !! I have a budgie who was super wild and it took me 4 months just to get him perch on my fingers maybe he was traumatized in the past because 4 months is a long time try to feed him while he is in the cage and keep repeating this also for around 20 mins everyday just keep your hand in the cage without moving so he can adjust to you and after a while hopefully he will know that you are not a treat to him
