I brought a new tiel home Friday .. Sunday I was sitting with her and my other tiel in their bird area with the cage door open to get her use to us and mayb want to come out. I got a phone call and walked away and then went to walk the dog. I forgot to close the cage door .. when I came back an hour later I found her on the floor caught in the leg of the cage :she must have spooked : I think she broke her leg :: I’m sick to my stomach I can’t believe I let this happen to my new bird. Should I take her to the vet?! Thx for any support.

Is she standing on the leg? Walking on it? If you think it is broken I would absolutely get her to the vet ASAP.

She’s def favoring her other leg and I can tell the bad leg is not clamping down on the perch as much as the other : thx for replying :: I’m sick to my stomach about this I can’t believe I left the cage door open and walked away

I agree with @onamom - if you suspect your bird has broken her leg she will need to see a vet, preferably an avian specialist, for it to be properly assessed, treated and pain relief given. I'm not sure where in the world you're located, but the following list should help you find one close to you should you not already be familiar with one ...

I wish you the best of luck and hope it's not a break! 🙏🙏🙏

You MUST take him to a avian vet ASAP. Don't waste any time or energy beating yourself up for what was clearly an accident.
Broken legs often heal very well with proper vet care.

Of vourse you feelvawful. We all do when we make mistakes that hurt our birds. I have had several birds breaks legs and one that badly broke his wing. All were treated by a vet and all healed quickly. I would much rather my bird get a broken bone than a mysterious illness.

By the way- you mentioned a dog. Do NOT let any of your household pets (dogs, cats) anywhere near your bird! No matter what anyone says. Birds and dogs and birds and cats are very bad combinations for the birds!

Take her to the vet of you think it has a broken leg.
Be advised but vets are extremely expensive, it cost me $100 for a vet to spend 10mins to look at my bird and tell me that he was ok

24hr update :: pearl is eating and drinking, she also walked around the cage and climbed on the bars :: I like to believe this means I got lucky and it’s not a full blown break. She def has a gash in leg and I’m still going to take her to the vet after Labor Day

Always keep in mind that it's much better to spend $100 for the vet to tell you your bird is going to be okay than the alternative!
