Ok, so I am new to this site or any forum. I looked for a forum that would have a lot of members. I have a very strong message to get out and I hope I can save someone and their parrot a lot of stress and money. Bare with me, I am not the best writer so I will just tell you what happened to me. I brought home a new parrot and its cage. But before I brought the cage into my home I wanted to give it a good cleaning. It's a very nice and large cage. As a matter of fact it had to be broken down in order to get it out of the last owner’s door. I set up two benches to lay one section flat to clean it I had a bucket of hot water and a brush, and a spray bottle of bleach and water. As I started to clean I sprayed it with the bleach mixture and let it set awhile, then I used the soap and water with a brush to start scrubbing all the bars down, Then I let that soak for a while, now it’s time to give it a good rinsing. My hose has the nozzle that puts out strong water pressure. And this is where it all started. I saw a Roach crawling on the bar of cage (I thought where did that come from) I killed the bug and continued to rinse the cage and then I saw another one. (Could that be the same one or ??). Then I thought! I placed the nozzle in one of the screw holes to flush out the hollow bars. Out came more roaches and more roaches. Yes there were roaches and roaches and roaches throughout each side, bottom and top of the cage. I thought I was going to DIE. My husband and I killed roaches for two days. If I would have brought that cage in the day I got it, my home would be infested with roaches and I would not have known where they came from. I’ll be honest; I would have never in a thousand years to think of a bird cage being a roach motel. I never, to this day have brought that cage in my home. We have made a rule never to take some ones used cage again. If you seem signs or even a small problem with a roach, and don’t know where their coming from tear down your cage and inspect it. It might be a job but it just might save you a ton of money and a lot of stress on you bird.
