Gold and blue macaw
Hi I'm wondering how long a blue & gold macaws 1st molt lasts for? It seems Billies is lasting months. 4 wing and 2 tail feathers out amongst loads of small ones. I've just noticed lots of new pins around her neck too.

The big molts seem to last 2 or so months.
Though, birds lose feathers in smaller amounts throughout the year.
The big molts seem to make lots of pins appear, and that’s when they shed old flights and tail feathers.
You’ll notice, if they lose one on one side of the wing/tail, usually the same day, the opposite one falls out too.

A reminder, on this forum, we love pictures! 😊

Molting is dependent on seasonal changes in the wild, with a heavy molt prior to big seasonal changes. In captivity, that molting cycle is not so well defined and can take awhile to complete. 2 months would be a close to natural cycle, in captivity 3 or more would not be unusual.

Billie is such a lucky big birdie to have a safe backyard playground! I'm curious about what your neighbors think about the net over your backyard.
My neighbours all love her and we always have people coming up to the gate to see her 🥰 we are lucky as she can be very loud at times haha
