You have my sympathies for your tragic loss. We have a heavy black Le Creuset Dutch (French?) Oven my SO has used often over the years for chili and stews, though less often lately since getting an Instapot. It is in the kitchen and the birds are by a window in an adjacent dining room with an open door-frame in between.


It seems all things points to the Dutch Oven in your case, but still I'm providing my anecdote as a counterpoint - anyway, I hope you find closure on this. Please take time to heal and do not fixate on blaming yourself.

im so sorry for your loss i cant imagine how hard this must be

i learned tonight too (fortunately just with a google search) that even cooking smells cam be fatal! any time i cook even with stainless steel the bois door is shut and a fan put in the hall blowing all smells away. its a big scary world, you never know what could be a danger.
