Please help! Pin feather? Blood feather?

Hi there!

So I'm a relatively new conure mom and I noticed this on my baby's lower back last night! She's only about 5 months old and still going through her first molt since I got her. There is no blood around it but it is very sore, at first I thought it was a new feather coming in but I couldn't keep to see the pin feather casing. I'm just very scared to do something wrong so here i am! Please help!

yup, that's a new pinny coming in. the bit in the center there that almost looks plastic is the shaft

they are sore and uncomfortable, more baths and try letting her catch some steam when you're in the shower which should help it out

That's a perfectly normal looking pin feather. I concur with LordTriggs- a nice warm bath in a steamy room will help offer some relief. And be sure you avoid touching the area until the sheath is ready to come off. Pins are very sensitive and sore for them.

Imagine holding a needle between your finger and thumb and rolling it. You can do this with the pin feathers, it will really help your Conure. It just helps separate the shell from the skin so it isn't digging in. I did this with all the pin feathers my Parrot had. He had so many at the back of his neck making him sore. It really helps and they soon learn that your doing them a favour and let you do it all the time. Its a good practise and doesn't damage the feather if you just roll the shell left and right x

Be careful when doing this as the sheath may not be ready to come off, and if you try this on a pin feather that’s not ready, it will be uncomfortable to the bird and he might turn around and nip you. Make sure the sheath is white and flaky before rubbing it off, and be sure there’s no more blood left in the middle of the feather.

Is your question in reference to the white "feather" just at the base of the tail. If so, I don't believe that is a pin feather. Conures have an oil gland at the base of their tail that they use to distribute oils on their feathers. Kermit has never permitted me to get so close so I assume it must be sensitive/private area.
