My room was painted a week ago and varnish was applied to the doors.
The paint is water based low VOC so I'm not so worried about that however
the decorators used their own varnish so I'm unsure whether or not it
was water or oil based.

I heard oil based paint takes much longer to settle and I'm guessing the
same applies to varnish. My IRNs currently in the living room, do you
think it would be safe to return him to my room yet?

The varnish is still a bit sticky, so that has me a little concerned.

Depending on how thick the wall /ceiling paint (Low VOC Water Based) was applied, commonly safe within one to two days as long as the room remains well vented and the door to the room remains open near all the time.

Varnish, as a produce, is rarely used in homes. Near everyone is using a water based Poly product (different name brands). We had an extensive amount of our past home coated with the LOC water base and we had full access within 24 hours. It was dry and could be walked on within 6 hours.

Still being sticky is odd and you will really need to contact both the installer and as you say "the decorators used their own varnish." That group should have provided clear and precise information on drying time and dangers to Human and household Pets (Parrot). They Also Should Have Been Told That You Had A Parrot!

Still Sticky After a Week! Call The Decorator(s), something is wrong!

Still stiky? I would not bring a parrot in there . Like 'Boats said, something is wrong there. I know violin varnish takes weeks to dry, even in a drying cabinet. Produces a beautiful finish, but around people and birds? No!

It's not extremely sticky, it's very mild but I wouldn't risk it anyway
unless I heard it was safe to do so.

They knew I had a parrot as I moved him out of the house while they were
decorating, I expressed my concerns about the paint (didn't even know they
would varnish the doors) and they assured me the paint was harmless, at
which point I realized they didn't know what they were talking about.

The doors aren't very sticky but when pressing skin against them there is
a small amount of grip as I pull away, definitely worrying to say the least.

I really do not want to get into a discussion regarding the meaning of words. That said, knowing the client has a Parrot(s) occurs when the colors and type of product used are selected, since it effects costs, which is days, weeks or even months prior to the work beginning.

Fresh Varnish used in homes dries hard in a couple days, at most.

When you are happy that the Varnish is dry, then let that be your guide regarding moving back into the room.

The paint was supplied by my parents who were well aware about the parrot
and the paint isn't really that big of a concern. From what they have told me
they didn't ask to have the doors varnished but the decorators did it anyway.

Regarding the "meaning of words" I'm not exactly sure what you're talking
about, did I miss something?

It's now 3 weeks since the varnish was applied and it seems as tacky
as ever. Is some very mild stickiness normal?

I've been seeing much less of my IRN the past 3 weeks because he had
to be relocated to another room and I feel like it's ruining our relationship
with one another.

I don't want to risk it in case it harms him but at the same time I don't
know whether I'm exaggerating it's stickiness.

Is there any solution short of abandoning my room?
