We got cricket with a good size cage, but her previous owner used corn cob litter on the bottom. I hate it, its messy and hard to clean so to newspaper she goes. But when i changed out her tray in the bottom, its extremely rusted. Can or should i do something about it? Can i just toss a coat of paint on it? She has no access to it, cant touch it or chew on it. I had also noticed the cage we got with our cag, the owners put a layer of wallpaper on the tray, easy to clean and solves the rust issue!

Well, I know it's dangerous if they come into contact with it. Do little particles actually get into the air? That's hard to say but possibly when you move it to clean it.

Since the bird isn't coming into contact with it, I think if you scrub it good with a wire brush, put on a rust inhibiting primer, you can probably paint it yourself and it should be ok.
