I just adopted two 12 week old lovies who were hand fed.

My question:
I'd like to separate them, but they already call to each other even if you try to handle one without the other. They'll even fly back to each other if they can. Can I separate them without causing harm?

The breeder I purchased from forced me to take two. I only wanted one. She wouldn't sell them any other way. :/

Thanks.

Most likely, the breeder believed that old wives tale about lovebirds needing to be in pairs. That isn't true, but since the breeder probably didn't know that, she will only sell in pairs.

Put them in separate cages next to each other, place the cages farther and farther away over time.

What PL2 said. I lost two lovebirds because of that myth, and I'm severely disappointed that someone who hand-raises lovebirds would still be perpetuating it almost two decades later. She probably does believe it, but I don't understand how someone who raises lovebirds wouldn't educate herself on them.

I bought a nice Prevue 18×18 cage. I'll be separating them shortly, and slowly.
