Being Memorial Day Weekend, here in the US, I'm reminded of a friend who celebrated Memorial Day & Veterans Day for those that he considered "Unrecognized Heroes". Jim was a veteran of WWII, US Army Signal Corps, responsible for Pigeon deployment, for carrying messages, and strategic information, from camp to camp. He worked with the homing pigeons. He told me of all kinds of great things, like parachuting the pigeons, in little gondola cages, to other camps, to be released and bring information to their home camp. And how everyone was using them, Americans, British, French & Germans! But, unfortunately, since we all were using them, we were all also shooting others' down to halt the delivery of their information. Now, Jim really understood the sacrifice that so many of those birds made. So, out of respect for them, he included them in his Memorial & Veterans Days celebrations. And just about right up until his death, he kept pigeons.
