ok so oxy is acting strange. he used to go to bed so easily but i have found the last couple of nights he wont settle. he scrambles around his cage like a little monkey.
Due to some nasty heat of late i have moved his cage into my bedroom wgere we spend most of the day due to the a/c. after he eats his breakfast we go into the lounge room where he gas plenty of space to move around and fly until it gets to warm then we retreat back to the a/c.
because of the heat and the a/c i have blockout curtains closed so there us no natural coming in :( but i have lights on in the room. we spend about 3hrs in the lounge room with natural light.
when i do put him to bed, we turn out all but 1 bed lamp which is on low and the tv gets turned down. when he wont settle i put a towel over the top of his cage covering his sleeping corner but that doesnt help.
i noticed he went into his cage today whilst he was out (he is out all day unless i go out, otherwise only locked up at night) he went in and acted like a "monkey".
could he just be settling in even more and now investigating his cage? or could it be something else?
he is a happy healthy 5month old alex, he has been with me since oct 25th 2012.
Any advice or sugestions are greatly appreciated.

Fargo- Blue and Gold Macaw
I had this problem with Fargo when i first got him! Would put him away at 7, turn the lights out, leave the room, and he would just jump around like a monkey..

I tried for a week (not long i know ;) ) but then i just thought well, if he wants to stay out.. why not!

At 6pm, Fargo goes to the EXACT same spot, i call his 'sleeping perch', which is on a curtain rod, and will stay there until i move him, he will not budge at all until i pick him up..

But, if i try and put him away at 9pm? he is not happy... if i put him away at any time after 10pm? he is fine, goes right back to sleep in his cage hahaha

I know its probably not the best letting him get away with when he wants to sleep..

but he doesnt bother me at all after 6pm and i just sit on my computer with the screen on the lowest brightness, but he is in the corner which is dark anyway so i have no problem leaving him out! We have had this sleeping arrangement for 3-4 months now and it seems to have worked! :)

i wont let oxy on my curtain rods, i live in an old house and i dont trust that there isnt asbestos in the walls and he will sit up there and chew.
when i first bought him home i would lock him in his room around 6pm (yes he has his own room) but wouldnt lock him in his cage till bout 8pm. he would just sit quietly on his cage back then and when i put him in his cage he would go straight up to his fluffy rope perch and go to sleep until about 6am when he would wake me up screaming for food.
that was a great ruitine up untill about 3weeks ago when after i'd put him in his room i'd hear him bang into the door trying to get back out, and when i'd go check make sure he was ok and put him on his cage, the cheeky little terror would fly out the smallest gap in the door as i squeezed out. not a good time for him to be out socialising as that is cuddle/ feed and playtime with kitty.
unfortunatley tho, since he chewed through the screen on his window and escaped yet again he is no longer left unattended without being locked up, but cause of the heat he has barely been in his room.
it gets to about 6.30pm now and oxy will sit on the corner of his cage roof and go to sleep, i leave him there till about 8 when i put him away and thats when the monkeying begins.
tonight i put him in his cage, turned out the light (hubby away for work so i can.... he cant type without light) turned tv right down. straight away the monkey behaviour. i left the room and shut the door, 5 min later i return and he contently sitting on his swing.
one major thing i have noticed since he has been in my room is no more 6am wake up calls :) but also since i got him back from his last escape of beung in the wild for 3 days he has stopped all contact calling and just happily chirps and chatters.

Ozzie - alexandrine parakeet
When I had Ozzie for about 3-4 weeks, there was a few days that he won't go to bed either.

I put Ozzie back in his cage at 8pm, becuase that's when I take my dog out for a walk. And if we came back before 9pm, I would let him out for anther half an hour. 10pm is usually the latest bedtime for Ozzie, unless we have friends coming over or something like that.

But during that few days, after 1-2 hour, I still can hear Ozzie playing with his toys and climbing around in his cage.

Now he is all back to normal. Every night when I gonna put Ozzie back into his cage, that is when he will start being very cuddly. :D he would start dancing around, acting cute, making weird noises, giving me kisses etc, he would do anything to aviode bed time. Lol :D
