Chattering Lory, 18yrs old (Sweet Pea)
Quite by accident, I have recently trained my lory (who I have had for 17 years now, since she was a baby) to hop on the end of a yard stick.

She got into a habit of going under a twin bed, and she would be all the way to the wall. When it was time for her to come out, she wouldn't come, even if I played with her favorite toy - a hacky sack. I had a yard stick in the closet, so I decided to scare her out, thinking she was scared of the yard stick.

But instead, she started attacking the end of it and biting it... soon I could feel that she was grabbing it with her feet, so I pulled my end of it and she emerged, still attached to the other end.

So I continued to use that method and as the days passed, it has become a very dependable method of retrieving her.

The other day she ran into the livingroom and under a console cabinet, and wouldn't come out. So I went and got my trusty yard stick, and presto!, I quickly had my birdie on the other end of it.

She actually likes it now... she's very playful by nature, and as I'm using the yard stick to get her, I say fun things to her in a very happy voice.

Of course, if she's within arms reach from me, she hops on my finger right away. But you know it's not always that easy with these guys... they like to explore. :p
