I often see 'birdie bagels' for sale in online shops in the US. We have no such goodies here so can someone enlighten me please?
What are 'birdie bagels"?

Yup, that's what I'd like to know too. Are they just tick cardboard rounds? And how hard are they? Do birds shred them?

Whoops, sorry. YES, it's cardboard. Layered on top of each other, and yes, birds shred them.

Three good places where I get mine from:
1. Local fabric shop. Ask for the cardboard bolts that fabrics come on and slice them yourself with a bandsaw, jigsaw or hand saw. I use my pruning saw - it makes for rough edges, but the birds like that.
2. Local old folks' home. They use industrial-sized toilet paper rolls and the centre cylinders are rock hard cardboard. I asked at Housekeeping and they're saving them for me (when they remember to).
3. Local newspaper office: their newspaper comes on thick bolts and their cylinders are equally useful. Only thing is, you have to pay $2 per end-bolt of paper and then find a use for it before you can harvest the bagel-fodder in the centre. Hang on! I could be lining my cages with nice printless newspaper! Duhh!

Oh wow! What great ideas! I already docollect the centre cylinders from the handpaper towl dispencer at work (when the cleaning lady remembers to save them
) but I never thought of the other two ideas! Great suggestions!

MY BIRDS HAVE ACTUALLY GONE THROUGH AS MANY AS THREE IN ONE DAY...The local grocery store has a supply of these, courtesy of Ma Bell. Seems no one uses them anymore, except this particular area of town, where they can't seem to stock enough of them!
The phone company gets paid for the ads based on circulation. The store gets paid for putting them out for the customers. The birds get to shred something they are supposed to shred... instead of something they were not supposed to shred. Free of charge to me...
Seems like a win for everyone, eh?!
