My caique is having diarrhea!?

I just got a caique a week ago and he's been having horrible diarrhea! Its been coming out in huge amounts and all liquidy with no shape. Once in a while he'll have one with shape but most of the time its just huge. Other than that though he seems perfectly healthy, playing with his toys, eating, drinking, being social, learning tricks so I don't understand why this is happening. He is 11 weeks old so it cant be female hormones.. Any help please?

I see you have other birds, too. I truly hope you didn't bring your baby Caique home and put him in the same vicinity with your other birds???? It is very important to have a newly acquired bird checked out by an Avian vet. The next important thing is to quarantine a new addition for at least 30 days (close air vents if you have central heat/air).

I truly hope your baby Caique isn't sick, and more importantly, I hope he doesn't have something he could pass onto your other birds.

What is he eating? Is he drinking excessively? (If he is, that's not a good sign). I know you said he's acting fine by playing with his toys. Please, if you haven't already done so, get him checked out ASAP. Diarrhea for a week is not a good sign, and it's certainly not hormonal.

It takes very little time to dehydrate a bird. Find an avian ER, suck it up money wise, and get him diagnosed and rehydrated asap.

I brought mine home a few weeks ago and he had the same thing. It was really liquid-y and yellow. Haha My breeder said to just give him some "carbs" because he was mostly eating fruit and veggies. I cooked him up some quinoa and brown rice and his poop was normal again.

What has he been eating more of? If you're worried, you should take him to the vet, but really liquid bird poop doesn't always mean he's sick.

Hi, I know this is an old post, but hopefully someone will notice this anyway...I recently got my caique and the same thing has been happening with her. It seems like it gets worse when she eats watery fruits like grapes, so I was thinking that it was just the food. Is this what you found out too?

Yes foods with high water content will cause watery poops. Lots of fruit is usually the cause , it will also cause a color change, ie; red fruit-red poop.BTW fruit should only be about 10% of their diet with most common species. ( Lories are example of birds that need much more than that). I know next to nothing about cakes but i think their diet is similar to most New World Birds.

Caiques should be getting a little more fruit than most species, but maybe about 20% fruit, 40% veggies, 10% seed, 30% pellets and other cooked goodies (i.e. birdie bread, cooked mixes, ECT). Caiques are very active and can handle the extra calories. They naturally eat a lot of fruit and sprouts in the wild. Anyway, just give them some "carbs" if this happens. Whole wheat bread, birdie bread, plain Cheerios or even some scrambled eggs.

Also, don't feed more than one or two grapes a day. They are mostly water and barely any nutrients, so the bird gets full and gets malnourished. Also, same with watermelon.

Hi i have a 14 week old hahns macaw she has excess water in her stools shes eatin and drinking fine,my breeder said to keep her on the katee pellet as its complete,im wondering if she needs mor than thar can anyone help?

I don't recommend Kaytee pellets. I've also noticed more runny doppings when birds are fed dyed pellets.

Wouldn't hurt to take your hahns to an avian vet to be sure she's healthy and discuss diet.
